It gives Sid and Geno the puck more.

... so that Malkin can turn the puck over, stop skating, put his head down and pout, then slowly skate back to the bench... all while the opposing team has the puck in the Pens zone due to the afore mentioned turn over?

People will start to blame Kessel for not backchecking and be forced to see where the problem on that line actually is?

Maybe there's a big FA next year that we think we can pull in with the expiring contract

Kessel asked to leave...

That's what GMJR says. Kessel had a different take.

So Arizona essentially traded Domi for Kessel:/

I would have been more ok with our trade if Galchenyuk had a longer term. But we got younger even if we got a worse player of the same mold.

If the prospect is good, then the trade is ok. But I would probably rather have liked their 14th pick. It all comes down to whether we can resign Galchenyuk to a decent cost.

I don’t mind the trade. I really believe Kessel is on the downside of his career. He’s now in his 30s, and the days of not working in the offseason are probably going to catch up with him. He’s a great player and we probably won’t be as good offensively this year but....he clearly wore out his welcome. If he affected Malkin or Guentz negatively as reported, you need to dump him. We got a guy in Galneychuk that isn’t the greatest replacement, but I actually like that he’s a free agent at years end. The Pens might honestly (which is sacrilegious here) have a reloading year and make some moves next year. No trades, no loss of draft picks.

Now, if the Pens can somehow unload JJ...

Seeing how contracts have gone before the free agency period and what they’re rumored to be after I have zero interest in signing a big name free agent. 6-8 mil for a ~50 point guy. 9+ mil for anyone higher. Nope

If only there was a way to have a ppg+ winger for, idk, say 6.8. That'd be a steal...

Perhaps mikey has some scouting report on the prospect we received that says that he won't be an NHLer, but he was a 21st pick two years ago. So assuming that he still has the potential of a 1st round pick, I am actually ok with this trade.

(and if you look at my post history, you can see that I have liked/defended Kessel (and his production), so it is not like I am satisfied with just "getting rid" of Kessel)

From what I read he seems to be a safe bet to make it to the NHL, the real question is how much of an impact he can have. Great wheels and a good head, but needs to add some serious muscle.

20 bucks says Kessel is approaching this as a semantics debate about what “asking” means.

Kessel likes the victim role. He heading to his fourth franchise obviously all of three previous teams are at fault and Phil shares zero blame along the way.

The more I think about the Galchenyuk situation the more I'm okay with it. If it looks like he'll work here, we have a year to figure out an extension. If it doesn't, we cleared up 6+ mil in cap space to sign Phil/Galchenyuks replacement next summer

I am sure that's how Toronto fans justified it as well.
