Malkin, like all players, will continue to wear down. Malkin, unlike other players, will not handle it gracefully.

I’m not looking forward to twilight years Geno. He’s not exactly gonna go the yzerman route and find a more conservative way to be effective. There’s a shrewd move to be made in the next few years that would help us avoid a rebuild. This team won’t make it, I reckon.

There is no avoiding a rebuild imo. Also I'm a sentimental guy and want Geno to retire a Penguin.

I mean, trading Geno for prospects and/or picks would be considered part of a rebuild, no?

I suppose I meant “rebuild from scratch”. Where we need to rely on good fortune and scouting to get back to where we are now.

I’d actually consider moving him this season if he continues trending the same way. We aren’t getting past round 2 with this version of him. So what’s his purpose?

But we’ll see. Maybe he gets himself into shape. Maybe he gels with Galchenyuk. Maybe the whole vibe is different this year. But this is the most optimal kick in the butt offseason he’s going to get. If it doesn’t do the trick, then I think the tea leaves are pretty obvious.

On the other hand, I want GMJR to have no part of a Malkin trade.

Geno is off to Russia once his contract is up, he'll be 36, just enjoy him now.

It would be the rational thing to do, yes. The question then is what you're looking for in return. If you're looking for established players you're probably not getting much. If you're looking for picks and prospects you're effecively in rebuilding mode. Either way, you declare the window officially closed, which it probably is anyway.

I said after the playoffs that you have two options: keep the core and hope for the best or trade everyone under 27 except Crosby and build a new team around him. I'm not convinced merely retooling will do the trick, although I like the new tools so far, but it's a long season, anything can happen, etc etc.

Based on Geno’s quotes in that article, the tension between Sullivan and Kessel had him caught in the middle. That’s no longer the case, so I fully expect him to have a better season.

Which is what NBA fans would have said 10 years ago. GMs in that league have started thinking more practically, and both fans and management are happier for it. The NHL will get there eventually, but it will be after our opportunity has passed.

Of course, in the NBA a single player can transform a whole team.

Detroit went the sentimental route. They are now one of the most irrelevant franchises in the league largely because of it, with no clear path out of the muck.

I’m not hardlining here, and I get the counterpoint. But I really don’t want to be Detroit.
