TIL that Trocheck is from the Burgh...
Seriously? It's mentioned literally every time we play Florida.

reddit seems bad.
I only use it for fantasy football news/discussion (r/fantasyfootball)

Other than that it's a complete circle jerk

is there any consensus about why malkin was so terrible for most of the year? he's doing this stupid tournament. should we assume he's healthy? if so, then what? out of shape? doesn't like the coaches? doesn't like his teammates?

if he's a guy who is physically diminishing and won't change his game to adjust, you trade him as soon as the right deal comes along and he waves his NMC/NTC/whatever. sentimentality doesn't pay the bills. i'm not interested in seeing us eschew a succession plan simply because of warm and fuzzies. especially for a guy who seems to just piss everyone off during actual gameplay. the shrewd move is to get value for your guys after you've realized they're on a bad trajectory, but before the rest of the league has fully processed it.

but if he's just in pouty russian mode, you try to make it work by shuffling the on ice and off ice pieces as best you can.

I'd say judging by his comments, he didn't like the coaching/strategy, and his teammates being continually rotated since James Neal left has to piss him off.

I thought the same :P

At least if we keep Malkin. The problem with Neal is his cap hit though. But perhaps we can swap him for Hörnqvist, Johnson or Gudbrandson...

The problem with Neal is Neal.

Considering contracts... I wouldn't trade Jack Johnson for Jame Neal straight up.

Neal might even be a bigger bone head than JMFJ

The problem with Neal is not his cap hit. It is the term. He’s a guarantee 20 goals and is paid appropriately. It’s just that he’s paid for too long.

I wouldn't want James Neal back, I think Malkin does have a right to have consistent linemates and constantly screwing with his line to try and re-create the HBK line every year has to get old.

That being said, him and Kessel aren't defensively responsible together, so other than let him play with glorified 3rd liners, don't know how to fix that.

should have put him with Sprong and Rust or some other responsible LW early in the year.

god forbid we experiment for 5 minutes though. would have been way too risky of a maneuver in meaningless october games. and driving up sprong's trade value by giving him an nhl center? outrageous.

I don't know if the Sprong situation would have held true. He got a legit shot in Anaheim and still was a healthy scratch by the end of the year. May have hurt his value even more, lol.

I’d say this year was an outlier. He was mucho injuredo and played a lot of fourth line minutes because of a slow start. Don’t forget, he was in the finals back to back years, resulting in short summers.

Neal 2018-19: 63 games, 7 goals, 12 assists. (9 goal 82 game rate)

$5.75M per.

He flat out doesn’t skate well enough to be super effective at even strength in this NHL.

I did, and you got two things wrong. That he is a guaranteed 20 goals, and that he is paid appropriately. Your back peddle, that was posted after I hit "reply" and went to look up the numbers, doesn't change that.

That's true right now. I think Neal is enough of a gamer where he'll take the steps this summer to work his game into a little better form. He won't hit 30 again or anything, but I think this will serve as a wake-up call for him...
