I get that, but their neck is on the line. A trade with Philly might be in the best interest of the team, but if it doesn't pan out, I might not see another GM offer ever.

I think that you are putting far too much value in the division thing. A trade with Philadelphia failing or succeeding has the same value as a trade with Vancouver failing or succeeding.

The Pens traded Recchi to the Flyers
Robitaille and Ulf to the Rangers
Nedved to the Rangers
Kovalev to the Rangers (for garbage)
Jagr to the Caps (for prospects that ended up being garbage)

The Caps then traded Jagr to the Rangers (and $18M for a broken Carter)
I didn't think they could move more than $5m at a time. I think that's why the PIT/WSH deal was listed as 4,999,999.99, because they weren't allowed to go over that $5m limit.
They paid a good portion Jagr's salary (retained), that's what I meant.

"Under the terms of this deal, the Capitals will pay $20 million of the $44 million remaining on Jagr's seven-year, $77-million contact. The Rangers will pay the rest." So I under shot with the $18, it was $20M.

“We certainly had to make a move from a cap point of view," Rutherford told 93.7 The Fan, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "...We were getting ourselves to a point where we might have been in a little trouble.

"It was going to be either [Jack] Johnson or Maatta to open up the necessary cap space and open up the logjam at defense. And as it turned out, it ended up being Olli.”
Why not trade both? Why not just dump cap space in Johnson and start over, even if that means packaging it with a pick? Why even say that and potentially de-value Johnson as an asset even more?

It's very well known around the league that Johnson and Maatta are/were available...him saying little bochinche on some podunk radio station has absolutely zero effect. Zip.

I just don't like that he said it that way. The guy literally signed Johnson and got us in this situation, to begin with.

I think he’s aware that he messed up. It’s a sunk cost. Better to acknowledge plainly and move on. No need to apologize every time JJ’s name is brought up.

Cap friendly is unreadable for me for some reason. What RFA's do they still need to sign?

Apparently, the cap is going to be low-end of $82mm

Thanks,

So the roster is pretty full at this point. I assume moving Kessel was the big move, but if that doesn't happen, do they just stand pat?

I still think they move one more. I honestly thought they were going to move Schultz given that he's an FA next year. I think they want to re-tool their defense more than they're letting on.

I'm probably wrong, but short of getting rid of Hornqvist/Kessel, he seems like the other high cap guy, unless they can move Gudbranson but they seem to be really liking him.

I don't see anyway they stand pat. GMJR is ornery and loves to tinker with things.

I just don't see anything that's really to like about this defense save Letang/Dumo right now. Pettersson(SP) is decent, Riikola is still untested, and Johnson Gudbranson are really dosage guys for me.

I’d prefer to keep Schultz through the end of his contract, unless a really good deal comes along at the deadline and we’re actually okay on defense.

Is it? With 5 RFAs and 10 UFAs I'd think it's not.

I thought Schultz was very good when he came back this year. I wouldn't want to give him up.

I wouldn't want to give him up either. I was more or less speaking in terms of getting cap room. If they can't get rid of Kessel or Johnson and don't want to get rid of Hornqvist, there aren't too many others that them leaving would give them breathable space.

They've done nothing but broadcast - with words and actions - that they are re-tooling the defense...and perhaps more, if situations allow...

When will you start referring to the 2019-20 season as this year? Training camp?

Rutherford: It was either Jack Johnson or Olli Maata

Regardless of the public statement, Olli got a good, useful young player in return. JJ wouldn't even have netted a NUB.

Right. Counterpoint: why not both?
