There's very few sitting duck coaches in the league...this is pretty much SOP...
Rutherford seems like he's jabbering at a lamp post these days though...so, feel free to turn your attention and/or pitchforks towards him...

Just a weird reward for getting swept out of the playoffs by an Islander team who got their only 4 wins of the postseason at the Pens expense.

The impact of this on his fireability is next to nothing. Especially with Vellucci in WBS.

Well, they got rid of Kessel, so all the effort problems are solved. Now Sullivan can get that elusive third cup.

Yeah. Hot shot replacement on tap + lame duck contract = a disengaged coach. This is a “See? We like you. Now it’s on you not to **** up” situation. The impact of this on his fireability is next to nothing. Especially with Vellucci in WBS.

I think Rutherford canned Bylsma and Johnston, right? How many coaches does a GM get before the knife turns on him? I'm not really sure about that number, might require some research...

Bylsma shouldn't count against him, Johnston however...

Wasn’t Johnston hired because all the real coaches got snatched already, and Bylsma had to go, regardless?
Rutherford is persona non grata right now, but this angle is a dead end. He fired 2 losers and sully is a guy with an embedded expiration date. Meh.

Johnston was brought in to bring us back to level...Bylsma let things get out of control, Johnston brought things back to square. Not that I want to have this discussion again...

Does any sane person actually disagree with that though?

A) “This milquetoast bastard is just what we need to get the ship righted”
B) “This is a trash heap of candidates. Let’s pick the one that comes with the best fundamentals”
C) “Whatever. At least he’s not Bylsma. Let’s see what happens.”
...I’m not sure which is most likely. Guess it’s probably some blend of the 3.

B is probably the heaviest. It was also at the end of the typical hiring period, so the candidate pool was small

There’s a little something there with ZAR, but his case is...woof. About 4-6 total weeks over 2 seasons where he looked like a top 9 guy. What’s that hearing going to be like.Zach Aston-Reese files for arbitration

My guess is there won't be a hearing.

The injuries are obviously a concern for ZAR. However, if you project his numbers from last season over a full 82 games, he would have 250 hits and 15 goals. Those are the numbers of an ideal 3rd liner. Until he proves that he can stay healthy and deliver that over a full season, he should be paid like a 4th liner.
