So you don't dislike Simon, you dislike how Sullivan uses him. Hardly Simon's fault...

Sullivan should have used him as a janitor.

Trained with Crosby in the summer.
It's definitely valid criticism. The thought is is that Simon can't make space for himself or others, but he's smart enough to work with Crosby and Guentzel...a lot of the league favors duos as opposed to trios...you get two guys that work, and then you rotate a third...McCann definitely looks better as that third guy, but Simon playing with Jugs and Hornqvist amounts to a net-negative line probably, more often than not. McCann down with that group moves the needle enough to give them some ability to carry the puck into the zone.
So you spread the wealth a little bit...Simon does a pretty good job keeping plays alive, he's a better passer than shooter at this level and he's fine in support. Guys like Dupuis and Rust were given a couple of summers to improve their finishing ability and both did...I think you give Simon one more summer to see what skills he can craft and if there isn't a noteworthy improvement to his technical skill, you either find a new home for him, or you keep him around as a spare that can fill-in as needed...I would say put him on the 4th line, but if the identity of the 4th line is led by Garrett Wilson - then it's pointless to have him there, he'll just die on the vine...
If you want to make a 4th line to be just a weak, weak 2nd line...then you stuff Simon-Bluegers-Aston-Reese/Adam Johnson (who I'm not sold is an NHLer) there, or some such and if they pop in 15-20 goals between them over the year, you count it as bonus...or maybe they get good enough defensively where you can play them after every power play like Pascal Dupuis used to do for us...

Complaints about Simon sound very similar to complaints about Dupuis in his first few years before finding his groove with Crosby.

I don't remember people complaining about Dupuis. He was an afterthought in the Hossa trade and was never expected to produce much.

Nah, Hossa was the throw in for the Dupuis trade.

I definitely remember complaints about him having no hands and questioning why he was with Crosby.

Yeah. Isn't there a pencil drawing of no-hands Dupuis?

He didn't have hands. Had a hell of a shot though.

Well that right there was probably our first mistake. We specifically didn't acquire speed and everyone saddled up defensively, led by the captain.

On the rush slapshot, yes. Didn't have dynamic shooting ability, finishing from in close, in-stride shot, couldn't shoot unless it was on his spot, wrist shot was not a plus, etc. All of which improved in his time here, made it a point to so he could work with Crosby.

I have a tendency to only remember the good times. Speaking of which, did the 2018-19 season start yet?Yeah. Isn't there a pencil drawing of no-hands Dupuis?

In retrospect, perhaps. But we made it a point to get slower, tougher, and, allegedly, better defensively...moving Kessel for change will continue to signal that change in all likelihood...Well that right there was probably our first mistake. We specifically didn't acquire speed and everyone saddled up defensively, led by the captain.

Dupuis was a healthy scratch in the cup run. Then was off of crosby’s line for a while. He wasn’t a huge contributor to this team early on. His lack of offense was a problem. Then he somehow transformed his game late in his career

I just wanted to say how much I hate this post on r/penguins:

A bunch of jags patting each other on the back for staying to cheer for the team after game 4.
