Well good, we were gonna owe both of them $21 million for the remainder of their deals...so...
Nice. So it all evened out.

Thank goodness for the internet. Knowing what I've been told today, I can save myself the time when the actual players play.

I'm not sure how MR25 will make through the season if JJ is still on the team.

GMJR Press Conference via Pens Inside Scoop:

Rutherford: "The signing today of Tanev was really good for us, we're really happy about it. Everyone in the org thinks highly of him. Good skater, good PKer, when he's playing he makes our team harder to play against." -SK

Rutherford: "We've changed the makeup of our team. Now it's training camp and a time for the coach to work hard and bring it all together. ... The group of forwards we've added gives us depth and more balance to get back to where we were in 16 and 17 to roll those lines." -SK

Rutherford: "It's a new excitement, a new energy. The 3 new guys that we brought it were so excited it was coming thru the phone. They'll bring that to training camp and practice throughout the year." -SK

Rutherford: "We felt so strong about Tanev that we were willing to go as far as we had to go to make sure we got him." -SK

Rutherford: "With Tanev's age, the way he trains, I don't have any issue with the term." -SK

Rutherford said there is a good chance the team will have to make another move given their cap situation. -SK

Rutherford: "He has good speed, can move up and down the lineup. Good team guy. I talked to some people that have followed (Tanev) close and everybody spoke very highly of him." -SK

Rutherford said his focus has been on changing the team. Now he will try to sign HC Sullivan long term, but not sure when he'll get to that. -SK

Rutherford: "We feel Galchenyuk, wing is the best place for him. He's a shooter." -SK

Rutherford: "I like the way our D is structured. ... The structure is the right shots and left shots where they should be. Can we make it better? Sure. You always can. We're not saying it's the best D in the league." -SK

"At this point in time I'm comfortable with our defense."

Rutherford: "As long as we play the way we're capable of, we'll contend for the Cup." -SK

Rutherford to the media: "To those guys that text me, don't. Because I'm not going to answer you."

I could've sworn MR25 complained as much about Phil as I did during his prolonged "why bother" stretches. Guess I was wrong.

Nope, you did not, or nope, I was not wrong?

I loved having Phil on the team, mostly, but jfc there were so many times I just wanted to punch him.

What the hell could this lineup possibly look like?

Jake-Sid-Horny
McCann-Geno-Galchenyuk
Tanev-Jugs-Rust
Kahun-Blueger-Simon
ZAR

Don't think I like that second line.

Nope, I didn't really complain about Phil.

But I will not rest until Jack Johnson is fired into the sun.

This team is better than the one we ended last year with. Jugs needs out. A competitive 3C needs in. And then we may have something.

I don’t think Tanev’s contract will be an issue. Galchenyuk could flourish with a real center. And the other guy has some upside. Our compete level went up and some toxicity went out.

2nd round. Here we come.

Yep. Play it out in practical terms. He’s always going to be a spark plug. And 3.5 is less than Brandon Prust was paid to be a punching bag not that long ago. It’s not a bad AAV. And after year 3, there will be teams who will take him - And actually give us something in return. The only real threat is if he gets banged up bad enough to compromise his jam but not bad enough to LTIR him. But that’s not unique to him.

Tanev is a Sully/Sid kind of guy. We're counting on the team being better seeing that kind of work on the ice. At this point, I like the idea of surrounding Sid with guys like this.

'Peg fans love him. I won't care about the cap hit if this guy is even close to right:
He'll be a fan favorite within weeks. Guaranteed. Fast skater, gritty, selfless. The best.

This is where I'm at. I wouldn't call it love, but I'm not worried about the 2025 Pens because I've always assumed the 2025 Pens will look more like the 2003 Pens than the 2010 Pens anyway. Tanev isn't going to move that needle either way.

It's not a passionate love. More like a iced coffee on a hot day kind of love.

Part of me buys that...but the other part of me goes "it's a hell of a lot tougher to turn things around if we have a bunch of tough **** on the books..."

Basically, winning the Cup is like getting a great beach body...you can come at it from a skinny perspective and add muscle (my preference) as opposed to being a whale and then have to shed the weight, then add muscle...right now, we're eating fried mayonnaise balls and Twinkie root beers...

St Louis and Washington seemed plenty zaftig going into the last 2 seasons. And they stayed that way for the most part.
