Is the idea of term almost meaningless anymore, and just a way to keep the number down? So GMJR figures we’ll offer 6 with the plan of unloading if necessary in 3, maybe 4?I'm less upset about that. Dude's a UFA and they always get overpaid a bit. $3.5MM is the same level as Rust, Clutterbuck, Sobotka, Eller, and less than that waste Tanner Pearson. Tanev works his ass off, blocks shots, finishes his hits, is a top level PKer, and managed to put points on the board last year. It's too much money but I don't know that it's an egregious amount.... if it was for like a two or three year deal to see if he can build off the 29 points he had last season. Six years is just too long for a guy whose worth relies on taking a beating.I like Tanev and am a big fan of guys who bust their bag on a nightly basis, but I'm a big believer in not giving term to bottom line guys.
Nor do you give them 3 and a half million dollars per **** year
That’s the rationale I was hearing tossed around online after the Hayes signing in PHI, anyway.

Most likely. Maybe GMJR threw another $500K per year at him and added a year just to quell any talk of some kind of M-NTC just so in four years if they need to open up cap space they're not blocked from sending him anywhere. There's also the expansion draft for the 2021-22 season. Is the idea of term almost meaningless anymore, and just a way to keep the number down? I'll be interested to see the contract terms for Ferland and Donskoi. They're also not top six forwards of similar age who produce more but don't lay it all on the line nightly like Tanev.

When you sign a fourth liner at 6 yrs x $3.5 mil per, that's a de facto NTC right there...

Among Jets' forwards he was 9th in TOI/GP and EV TOI/GP. Won't surprise me if (by default) that he's starting the season as a third liner.

I’m quite pissed off. Not even an hour into FA and it’s back to the fallout shelter for me.

He averaged 14:07 per game last season, so this dumb guy is already wrong. Dude was an UDFA who went through 4 seasons of college hockey, of course he doesn't have a ton of games played at his age. Not that they're even comparable players, but Chris Kunitz had played less than 200 NHL games when he was 27 as well. This dude should stick to jerking off to his advanced stats.

That 9th includes Hayes who was brought in as the ringer. So it was more like 8th for both, plus top PK unit.

That contract is big and unmovable today. At the time where we would want to trade him, he would have probably 3 years left at an AAV that’s relatively less than it is now.
This isn’t a good move. It’s also not a franchise killer. If tanev’s body holds up, he’s going to be tradeable when we need it.
In the meantime, we have a guy who gives a ****. Im not dreading it.

The good news is that as long as JJ is around, Tanev will never be GMJR's worst signing.

Scanning stats for anything good... Tanev has more hits/per than any Penguin, F or D. More blocked shots than any Penguin forward. More PK/per than any (remaining) Penguin forward.

4 years, $3.9MM per year for Donskoi, so there's a comparable.

The first two likely because his line never gets the puck away from the opposition.

Yeah, it sucks when everybody can't do everything and only get paid $2M for it.

Tanev is good imo. The Jets will miss him.

3.5 isn't bad in this day and age, the term is a killer. Let's hope he stays healthy and somewhat productive.

Yeah the money if you are talking 2 or 3 years... is at least not awful. 6 years though? that's rough... you are supposed to be able to negotiate a lover AAV if you give more years, but somehow that didn't happen.

Well, it is difficult to score goals when your center is just standing along the board with his head down, pouting.

Funny how Kessel's numbers dropped once Jack Johnson came to the team
He was at .95 in 17-18, .76 in 16-17, and 1.01 in 15-16.
