What’s the point of trading a first round pick without moving anyone else on the roster? Right now, it’s full, so unless you move Johnson, Gudbranson, or Kessel, it makes little sense

Thinking out loud: maybe rust and a 1st for a legit winger is the move....but I have zero idea who that winger is

I don't think the idea is to trade the pick and be done with it.

Yeah there has to be a bigger plan here, but we only see the tip of the iceberg now.

Lost a top-four d-man, subtracted cap.
Added a middle-six forward, added cap space.

I don't know if this deal cancels out the Kessel/Johnson for Zucker/Rask...I'll try to find out.

Yea for sure. But I’m not sure what it does with anyone that we want to trade.

Like kessel plus a first brings what? A better, younger winger? That scenario doesn’t make a ton of sense

JJ plus a first? That’s a lot to give up to dump a contract.

I don't even need to see the return. I'm sold.

See I don't think it's worth 21 to move JJ out. The cap hit is just too low to warrant that.

The cap hit of buying him out is peanuts...if we were really desperate, that's an easy play.

Trading 21, where we could get a legit first rounder to fall to us, would be a horrific move...

Absolutely agree

His cap hit yearly isn’t totally atrocious. It’s bad but not a killer. I wouldn’t do that for a second, maybe a third.

Can we start a GoFundMe for the buyout?

I think the buyout is a little over 1 million spread all the way to 2027. It’s not terrible considering the fact that the cap continues to go up. But it would be nice to find someone to take that contract

It will take an incredible offer put together by the Pens or finding an incredibly stupid GM to move JJ. Hoping for the latter, know it will take the former.

I think it's fair to assume that he's worth another questionable contract...I think if we went to Minnesota and offered him straight up for Victor Rask, I think they'd do that...this is where pro scouting really comes into play (yes, the same pro scouts that may have recommended Jack in the first place)...but not all players that are stapled to the bench or on the fourth line making $4 million are bad...you have to really sift through and find what that player actually is, not what his stats suggest that he was...

Matt Niskanen was one of the worst players in the league when we got him...Justin Schultz was maligned terribly...we have a history of unearthing some guys that have been useful to us...this one is working from a limited marketplace, but that doesn't mean it isn't do-able if you try...

Part of the equation is: how desperate are you? Do you feel like it's ok to fill a hole with a more expensive piece where it doesn't belong? For instance, I'd go back to Vancouver because I have other pieces I'd be interested in: the rights to Edler (though I think that salary/NTC combo is gonna be too much, I still wouldn't mind trying), the rights to Brendan Gaunce, the rights to Josh Leivo, for instance...

Then you gotta take a salary back...I don't think you're gonna get away with it with Ryan Spooner because there's no term there...but what if it's Sutter, Beagle, or Roussel that comes back the other way for Johnson...? With Sutter you can fill the 3C hole, that loosens up Jugs to be moved or to be a winger...Beagle and Roussel are both fourth lines, but with Beagle you get a very reliable 4C. With Roussel you get a lot of agitation, and that frees up Simon or ZAR on the LW if you want to move on there...

Then, of course, you've now shed 2 LD in the last 24 hours if you make this move right now...so you have to be aware of that...that would leave just Dumo, Pettersson and Riikola..but LD are pretty plentiful in this league, so you might not be out of luck there...

No, but I never thought I would be a Rick Tocchet fan as I hated him on the Flyers.
