Ha, lucky ****ers. Well, we didn't lose to the cup champs this year, that's for sure.
I don't call anyone lucky that just swept the team I luck. Gotta give the Isles credit, they straight up suffocated the Pens with a dirty pillow.
Yeah, that empty net goal was all skill.

The EN goal didn't lose us the game or series...we weren't unlucky...at all...for any reasonable time...we were outplayed and outcoached...

This was an average, inconsistent team for pretty much the entire season. They fooled us with that winning streak in February where they made it look like the switch was flipped and they'd start taking care of business. Islanders were hungrier, hustled more, and Trotz has the formula to frustrate the Pens. And while a sweep on the whole is awfully surprising, it shouldn't come as much of a shock when you break down each of the 4 individual games. Pens got manhandled and with the talent they have on that team, that's pretty embarrassing.

3rd period was fun. They cared for a few minutes. Also, Sid passed up two shots from the low slot in that time, not great.

I cant fault Sully for not being able to get these slow and older players to play the speed and skill game that won them the back to back cups. That's all on GMJR. If I was in charge, I'd fire GMJR and let Billy G take over and see if he can put together another fast and young team before Sid/Geno get past their primes.

Billy G isn't going to put together a fast skilled team. He'll be bringing in more players like Wilson, Gudbranson, etc.

In terms of their very best years, yes. But they still have some highly productive seasons left in them, and they have some younger guys (Murray, McCann, Guentzel) that you can form a good nucleus around.

They will have to adjust their style and strategy though, if they want to be an elite team again. I'm not suggesting they become a Jacques Lemaire-style, systematically boring team - but they need structure and discipline in terms of their system. And they need it badly. If that can be accomplished under Sullivan, then great - I really like Sully. Regardless of the coach and GM, the team will need to buy in.

Don't forget - Johnston had them playing a very conservative system before Sully got here, and I believe the carry-over from that was a factor in their 2016 and 2017 success. Each season that's passed since then, they have drifted further away from that. Do I think MJ should get any credit for their 2 Cup wins? Not directly, no.. but I think you guys kind of know what I'm getting at here. Sloppy does not win championships. Defense does.

I'm not saying you have to blow it up, but Sid and Geno are both on the wrong end of 30. Sid will probably be more productive longer just because of his style and how he dedicates himself to the game. Geno not so much, and I love Geno. I'm just saying these guys have been around for almost 15 years now. The downturn is coming. It doesn't have to be as bad as it was during the years from 2002-2006(missing the playoffs 4 straight years, losing 16 in a row, Dick Tarnstrom being your leading scorer etc), but there are going to be some lean years coming up.

This. I'm not surprised the Pens lost. I didn't think they'd make it out of the first round. But I did think they'd at least win a game or two. It was a truly embarrassing performance.

The more responsibility Geurin has, the worse things get. The farm teams are both a mess and he played a huge role.

The Pens had the goalie pulled longer than they held a lead all series.

The EN goal didn't lose us the game or series...we weren't unlucky...at all...for any reasonable time...we were outplayed and outcoached...
Basically by one goal each game. Take away Eberle's 95.4% shooting percentage, which is one of the biggest statistical anomalies of all time, and yes, every game is complete coin-flip. Game 1 was overtime and game 2 was a 6-2 penalty disparity. Game 4 was Crosby hitting the post from another overtime and some of the worst officiating I've seen in quite a while (which is luck).

Now, yes, we were definitely outplayed and completely outcoached. Totally. And there's no way we win with Letang and Dumo playing like that no matter what.

But it's not like every game was 4-1 based exclusively on their hugely superior hockey.
