This team just packing it in 2 years in a row as Rome burns down around them is shitty.
we packed it in when we went to 6 games against the eventual Cup champion? not sure what you're going for on that

also, yeah, I think you guys are all jumping off the boat way too early (for next season)

the team needs a more structured identity but Rutherford has made some great moves so far in his Pittsburgh career; let's see what he can do

We are in pretty good company. Only 2 teams that haven't won a game yet - us and the President trophy winners.

I'm not ready for the season to end. At the same time, if the Pens can do no better than this I'll be glad to get it over with.

Worth more to us than the market...right? I mean, when you put it like that, makes it sound like a giveaway...
Yea, I don't think I'd trade Hornqvist, he's seemingly the only real heart and soul, wear it on your sleeve guy.

I'd hate to see Maatta go - I think he's a hell of a defenseman.. but they have immovable pieces, so we'll see (although JR did swing Daley for Scuderi, so who knows....)

I'd say the changes that need to be made in terms of personnel are not drastic. Bottom 6 needs more speed and a guy who can actually win draws. A little youth/speed/tenacity.

The real changes need to be centered around their overall style of play. I thought they were making progress in this area at several points during the season, but they are trying to ram the square peg into a round hole in this series, and they played right into the hands of the Islanders.

I don't think it's all doom and gloom. And honestly, the season isn't even over yet. There's still (at least) a game left. A few key moves transformed the clusterf**k team of 2014 and 2015 into back-to-back champs. These guys might have a few good playoff runs left in them yet.
They really needed a guy like Sundqvist.

Per Matt Sunday this was the crowds fault.

He's been a found wallet for St. Louis...I'm surprised how well he has done. Which isn't at odds with what you said, G...

Seems to be DK's major take, is that because the fans in Pittsburgh didn't stand and support this sideshow, they lost because of it.

According to those in the arena, it was loud as ****. Then the Pens gave up 2 goals in 30 seconds and decided to stop trying to win. But yeah, they lost because the fans didn't chant for them.

i believe that the isles were boosted by their crowd in games 1 and 2. but it took 30 years of being dogshit to rile up that level of enthusiasm for a team that looks capable. you can't just drum up that enthusiasm from nowhere.

I think it was the other way around. The isles weren't boosted by their crowd, their crowd was boosted by the Isles. They came out flying, hitting everything that moved, and controlled the play from the start.

Sunday doesn't believe it to be the case, but when you have success long term, you get complacent. It's human nature. He keeps comparing the crowds to Nashville, Columbus, Carolina, Isles, etc. Those teams haven't experience success until recently. Their fans are going to blow up over it.

The Pens fans did the same in 2006-2007 when we made the playoffs and continued through the first cup run. It was newer. It was 15 years since we've experienced that. And then expectations change.

It's the same as comparing the Pirates black out wild card game to a NY Yankees wildcard game.

He is a fat turd.

Exactly. In the comments under his "story" people keep saying "did you see Columbus!" "did you see Carolina!".

No crap. They are winning and putting on a show in front of their home crowd. It's easy to cheer for that.

It was loud enough on TV that I actually thought they were still in Long Island.

home ice doesn't really mean anything in hockey, so crowd noise has almost no impact on the outcome

if crowd noise really mattered, home ice would be more significant

Crowds definitely get you pumped up (and similarly, crowds getting on you, they affect you)...home ice advantage in terms of line matchups. Seen in playoff results, home team wins game 1 over 60% of the time.

I didn’t get the sense they were blaming the loss on the crowd. I took it as the crowd didn’t help matters. Neither the team nor the crowd were playoff-worthy.

Is it the team’s job to inspire the fans, or the fans’ job to inspire the team? Can’t it be both?

The Pens were lame. And at the first sign of adversity, the fans went lame. It’s been like that for *years*. I get the idea of “But I’m the paying customer!” But don’t the Stanley Cup playoffs call for the fanatic mindset to take over? I don’t know.
