NHL Dept. of Player Safety will not bring supplemental discipline against @penguins star Evgeni Malkin for hit to head of @Capitals T.J. Oshie. Sense I get: They felt the in-game punishment was enough, and felt that Malkin was bracing for impact more than delivering head shot.

I actually fully agree with this. The in game call was the correct weight and needs no additional discipline. The refs took a minute and got the call right.

If the unwritten rule is head contact is going to be 5 minutes if a player even remotely stiffens to make contact, even in a defensive position as in Malkin's case in order to penalize any type of head contact - then fine.

Suspensions can deal with the differences between intent.

That means the Giroux twitter gif posted above means Giroux gets 5 and a game because head contact was made and he prepared himself for it.

You'll have collisions -and I'm sure you'll have cases where idiots like Oshie think that players will turn invisible and prepare to skate through them with some matrix 2 level magic that allows them to float through the opposing player only to have the reality of the other players shoulder knock them into next week because in the real world you can't float through people, but head contact is head contact and so 5 and a game and that's the no bullshit rule.
