Seems fine. I’d like to see them teach him how to kill penalties but for a bottom pairing defenseman you can do worse.

He doesn’t suck. He’s dumb and occasionally aloof

He did. Everyone in the world did. Oleksiak isn't nearly as smart as Niskanen...and that's plenty.

I wouldn't go as far as to say he outright sucks, but he is a classic example of a player who got by with his size throughout his life, and as a result never developed the finer points of his game. The problem with that is the fact that today's NHL is so much about situational play. I do think his skating is decent for a big man, and he went through a stretch in the early spring where he played really well. Seems like a bit of a hefty contract for a bottom pair guy, but I think he really adds an element this team needs. With a steady partner and a full year in the Pens system, he might improve a little. In his role, NOT being noticed on most nights is a good thing.

Adding another defenseman with a brain would be good.

This is generally right. I'd even say he's very much a "plus" skater...he's a terrific athlete...good genes, his sister (Penny) is an Olympian...I wouldn't go as far as to say he outright sucks, but he is a classic example of a player who got by with his size throughout his life, and as a result never developed the finer points of his game.
