Didn't Mackey recently (like a few days ago) say that Rust's situation was on the backburner and wasn't a priority?

Yea that's gonna be an overpayment from me. At his best the dude is a 45ish point winger with a sporadic scoring touch and could find himself as the 4th line RW this season. Sheary was at least coming off a 20+ goal, 50+ point season when he signed for $3MM before he changed his name and turned into a *****.

He is super versatile, in his prime, and a big game guy.
Bye Sharry.

Can he? Because according to mikey he's right handed which means if you don't play him on the right wing the entire team will end up with prolapsed anuses. So to me that's only four spots. RW, RW, RW, and RW. Unless he's willing to change the way he shoots, then we can talk.The dude can play in 7 different spots in the line up. Overpayment my ass.
Don't get me wrong. I really like Rust. I'd start the season with him slotted at 3rd line LW and top PK duty. I just would have preferred a number closer to $3MM even.

3.5 doesn't break the bank. You have to pay players. The market cost would be more to replace him from outside.

I'm pretty sure most people who complain about this are convinced we could ice 4 lines of all-star players at super discount values because why not.
Why spend 3.5 on Rust when we could get Tavares for 4.5?
It's like the yahoos wanting Grabner because I'm sure we could get him at the same cost as Rust and not 5+ he'll get on the open market most likely.

That was a lot more money and wasn't Semin 2-3 years older too? Also, Semin is not remotely as versatile as Rust.Having flashes of the contract given to Semin
I also personally would have loved to have seen it closer to $3 MM but the times are what they are.

No, it's people that think "Why spend 3.5 on Rust when we should get him for 2.75 or maybe 2.5?"
People like Grabner get $5M on the open market because GMs give people like Rust $750K-$1M too much on the RFA market.

Closed market != open market.
RFAs virtually have a bubble and the open market has a bubble. They rarely cross. Why would either side cite precedent to the other? The open market gets how it gets because it's the open market.

So the contracts that UFAs sign are never influenced by the contracts that RFAs sign, nor vice-versa...?Closed market != open market.
