I'm starting to get the impression that Letang's ability to be effective is going to mirror Troy Polamalu. In short, when your game is built on speed and the ability to make up for mistakes, you never truly learn how to eliminate the mistakes from your game. Then, one day, you're not fast/quick enough to make up for your mistakes anymore...and you don't look very good.

Here's hoping he can find some Rod Woodson in there somewhere.
yep. though the hail mary here is that he couldn't work out last year because of the injury/surgery, and even his summer was probably heavily compromised. so if he can get into his offseason freak routine...maybe there's hope.

but yeah...the physical stuff was easy, so he could devote more energy to the mental part. well, now nothing's easy, and he has to divide attention. and we'd have more luck getting him to divide an atom.

I'd try to cash out on Letang...see what another 50-point, RHS d-man is worth on the market...hurts me to say it, but...

Who else is a RHS and overpaid? Maybe we pull a disappointment swap. We have better infrastructure to reclaim this profile than the other guys.

...which means Letang probably is really f’d. He can’t pull it together on THIS team?!? The team where everyone pulls it together?

The thing to me that says Letang will never learn is look how many other defensemen that have defensive concerns come here and are at the least serviceable. Trade Letang for stuffs, sign Carlson.

You want to move Letang to safety?

Justin Faulk...?
What are the odds that Carolina is on Letang's list of 18 teams?

They lost 4 of the 6 home games this post seasons. That's awful any way you cut it.

I'd say it's fairly likely Carolina is on his no trade list. I can't think of 10+ teams less palatable. I mean...I can, but not with his assumed standards.

18 is a lot of teams...so I guess 60%. He's got Jordan Staal there...Don Waddell was a scout in Pittsburgh, Mike Bales was a coach here...two long-time d-men to work there with in Steve Smith and Glen Wesley....I'm not sure there's any other meaningful connection...but there's some familiarity...

Hot take: Letang will be good again in 18-19.

Also **** Jason Mackey in the ear

You think he will get smarter or younger?

Each is equally probable.

I think that the last year plus was the outlier compared to his entire body of work and to the extent that he is required to adapt his game as he ages, that will happen through a combination of his own recognizance and effective coaching

The guy was one of the top 5 dmen in the league from 2010-2015 (seems like this has been entirely forgotten on this board). I don't think that version of Letang is gone forever, but I suppose I'm an optimist. Even when the guy was a Norris finalist people were unhappy with him which is why I've avoided engaging in this debate; he's extremely polarizing and people made their minds up years ago about him and it's not really subject to change.

Imo

So...the shorter list would be the players that deserve kudos. Crosby, Guentzel...

This is where I'm at. We seem to be good at the reclamation projects.

I'm fine with keeping Letang. I think I'm not fine with playing him 20+ minutes a night, because "that's how he gets going."

Then trade him. That's a rhythm player (which is a specific subset of a player trait) if I ever saw one...see: Keith Yandle's usage in New York.

Then, if it's that big of a deal that he needs to get in a rhythm but will still always make mistakes, then yes, trade him.
