This team showed some grit, teeth, and heart last night. That was encouraging. And damn, Sid is the greatest.
Very much so. People around the league (Bylsma) can talk about some young player coming along and being better than Sid, blah blah.. but until you actually WIN something, you're not even close.

Forget the insane skill involved in that goal, and consider just how many times the game has come down to him and he's found a way to get it done. Additionally, he made a great initial shot; had Kinkaid beat. Came out, got in the face of Zajac, won the game on his next shift. Grit and leadership, time and time again.

Heart of a grinder, skill of a superstar. Best hockey player not named #66 or #99.

I'm not going to discount McDavid's skill because he hasn't won anything due to a completely inept GM. That's not his fault, he's doing some amazing things there on a horrible team. He may never win if they fail to fill out that team properly and that shouldn't take away from how good he is. He can only do so much and he's doing a ton this year, the team is awful.

Sid is a handful of bad breaks from having zero cups. Winning isn’t a good measurement.

McDavid might be the best in the world. Maybe it’s Sid. But the amount of team awards they have isn’t what determines it.

How would you characterize a Dan Marino vs a Ben Roethlisberger, then?

If Cleary scores on the breakaway that Orpik gave him in game 6, if Rust doesn’t score that unexplainable goal against Tampa in game 7 and if Ottawa comes out on top in game 7 OT, then it doesn’t make sid a worse player simply because he may not have any cups.

Being a huge Leo Messi fan, I retract from my statement. Somewhat.

If you want to make the case for the Sid + winning = proof thing, it’s all the stuff he does in between games that makes the difference. But that is taking this into a grey grey area.

re: McDavid. How much does Sid not taking a megacontract which allows his GM to buy surrounding pieces factor in here?

For some reference: McDavid's hit will be 16.7% of the cap, Crosby's 14.5% I believe. Malkin 14.8%. (this is went-to-bed-at-3-am-woke-up-at-8-am-math, fwiw)

Winning is a part of the resume...I think the degree that we attribute wins to individual players is a little overblown in hockey...it's a lot overblown in football. And in the NBA, it seems right to attribute it to individuals...

I guess I have a hard time divorcing his contract from Draisaitl's. I keep of view them in tandem.

With all due respect to the German Gretzky, they really outfoxed themselves on that one...bidding against themselves, they came up with that...

A quarterback factors into wins more than any hockey player, I think (unless we want to have a weird goalie discussion. I don’t). 50% of the total plays go through his hands. A 1C plays about 33% of the game, right? And they have plenty of nothing shifts.

Running plays being charitably given the QB as well? I suppose having a ball directly handed to you and then immediately handing it directly to someone else is hard...maybe he has people skills ("can't you understand that?!?!"). Otherwise, you're right around that 30% mark like a 1C or 1D...except a hockey roster is much smaller (53 vs 23).

Maybe it’s a wash. You CAN win without a good QB. You CAN win without a good 1C. But it’s rare.

Without an elite player in the NBA though...youre f’d
