Video breakdown: A Closer Look at the Penguins Bottom Six Forwards

Postby mikey » Mon Dec 04, 2017 11:07 pm

Just some clips (not a highlight reel by any means) of our bottom six forwards, with focus on the fourth line. This is not high-level stuff, it's more for the clips as I don't break down plays to any great degree. Also, it's poor voiceover work - particularly towards the end where I ramble on aimlessly and misidentify McKegg for Kuhnhackl I think...sorry, it was my third take, I wasn't willing to do a fourth and I wanted to go to bed haha...

Some things I go over: Defensive coverage, DZ -> OZ puck movement, forecheck rotation, hockey sense, physicality plus some of the goofs that they make...

Just something I threw together, no refunds.

Nice work, but more impressive to put the effort into making it ;)

At about the 5:00 mark, would you rather have Reaves fill in at RD or have Cole roam over and have Reaves stay at LD?

You mean to tell me that Reaves isn't a mindless skating fist and we would be better off with Sundqvist like the unintelligent morons on Twitter have been harping for the past week?

Great question. Truthfully, as I stammered through that sequence, I had forgotten what happens on it. I never cut my speech, I just try to talk through it in one take, so mistakes happen. Anyway, the answer is absolutely Reaves covering. Strong side of the puck, RHS on the right side, he's already there, that's how the system (and fundamentals of cycling) are designed, no real chance for speed to be developed coming out of that situation (where as wide speed can be developed in the middle and far lanes...so I'd rather have the better skater and backskater in Cole over there at LD). Cole didn't trust (or didn't read properly) that a forward knew to cover there. He was wrong.

I tried to sell people, amidst my excitement, that Reaves isn't an enforcer. He's a legit fourth line player that happens to be able to kick the **** out of everyone that comes at him Steven Seagal style...

I know. I like him. People are stupid though. I think he, and the fourth line in general, should be seeing more minutes than they've been getting, especially in situations like the last two games. Good video. I also enjoyed how it momentarily turned into a "**** on Ian Cole" video as well.

Haha yeah that was really unintentional...but he does goof a lot in a video not central to him...

Also, this seems like as good of a time as any, though without any promises as these take a while to put together because of how unskilled I am...if anyone has anything that they would like to focus on or know more about...I'm all ears...I have a double use for these as I generally show them to my players as a guide as well...

This is great, thanks for sharing. I try and watch everything I can about the Xs and Os, it's just a lot of information to absorb.

You don’t think Sheahan was too low on the forecheck that started around 1:45? He’s F3, but cuts through the crease at one point. The Rude beater punches and there are four guys below the dots for a second or two.

That is a high angle isn't it? But here's why, he has played 10 games against the Minnesota Wild in his career already, he knows he's a got pretty weak and skiddish puck mover back there in Dubnyk with an F1 who won't stop who is coming forehand side. The expected play is the reverse, so that's where he's going...he's "supposed" to be F2, not Hagelin. It's just that the puck gets rimmed into the strong side of the forecheck somewhat unexpectedly...so Sheahan goes from licking his chops to "ah ****** really?" so that's why he comes across at a tight angle as opposed to a more open, from over-the-top angle. Good catch by you...like I said, this was not an in-depth look at these plays, just some general principles and play...if I was really going for broke on these (and I'm glad you're pointing this stuff out), that angle to get into that play is far from ideal. But he's anticipating that reverse - like we see in the very next sequence when Kuhnhackl is in there first...

I really can't say enough how pleased I am with the general hockey awareness on this team these days...and it's been cashed in for championships. And with all due respect to Murray, our hockey IQ gets a nice shot in the arm with Tristan Jarry in net too, if we don't mind my saying so...

Murray reads certain plays at an elite level. Plays from out below the goal line. Crease plays in tight.

Jarry reads everything at an elite level.
