Kapanen to WBS

Postby Tico Rick » Wed Apr 08, 2015 9:52 pm

Kapanen scores on first shot in his first game with the Baby Pens, also picks up an assist as Pens beat Lehigh Valley 3-0 to clinch a playoff spot. Kapanen gets first star. Murray with another shutout.

Nice little interview with Kasperi here:
http://wbspenguins.com/articles/kapanen ... ahl-debut#

If the Pens manage to limp into the playoffs, why not bring up Kapanen? He can't be any worse than Kunitz, and he certainly doesn't lack confidence.

There's certainly plenty of evidence to indicate that he will.

I wouldn't burn a year of his ELC by throwing it into a house fire

Interesting quotes from Jonathan Bombulie (the best beat writer for WBS):
Here's my favorite Kapanen post-game quote: "The team has taken me in so well. Everyone congratulated me after the game. It's a big thing for me getting the respect from the older guys and all the guys in the locker room. That's what I want. I want to be a team player. I see a bright future ahead of us with this team. Hopefully we'll go all the way."

I hope Kapanen sees a bright future with the Pittsburgh Penguins too, because that's where I think he'll be next week. He looked great. Calling up a guy this late, you're not looking for 6 good minutes from a 4th liner. You're throwing a Hail Mary. Kapanen is the best bet.
Bombulie's twitter... and blog (which includes other writers).

Edit: Bombulie's thoughts that are posted on the blog.
“He’s slick. He’s obviously very talented,” Bombulie said. “He has really good offensive instincts. He’s undersized at 5-11, 180, but he’s smart enough to not let that get in his way. I really didn’t see anything negative out of him tonight.”

I think the question isn’t so much about what kind of impact he has in the AHL. He’s an immensely skilled first-round pick who looked good every time he stepped on the ice. I think Pittsburgh doesn’t so much care about how he looks against Lehigh Valley or Portland, this weekend’s opponent, but how he’ll look in a NHL playoff lineup. Once the salary cap restrictions goes away, could Kapanen be the spark the Pittsburgh Penguins need in a playoff series?

“If he’s here past Sunday’s game against Portland, I’ll be stunned,” Bombulie said. “Playing against the New York Rangers is obviously different than playing against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, but he’s got that thing where the puck follows him around. I’m not saying he’ll definitely make an immediate impact in the NHL, but he might.”

Kapanen's goal (in terrible quality). Friendly reminder: need to click a gfycat to get it started.

I couldn't say it any better than Jonny the Bomb does. The Pens, a fragile team right now, lacking confidence, limp into the playoffs, and bring up a skilled player oozing with confidence... we could have a perfect storm for Kapanen making an impact very soon. Nothing else seems to be working, so why not?

Let him grow in the minors. I don't think burning a year is worth this post season. Maybe wait until round one is over to see if its a necessity.

We can get up to 9 NHL games out of him without burning a year or counting towards a year of service. Just for informational purposes, I'm not necessarily in favor of that course of action...

Being scared of burning a year doesn't make sense to me. The earlier you start someone's contract, the cheaper their next one will be, since they won't be as polished when they sign it.

Does that 9 games actually mean 9 games played, or 9 games with the big club? Basically I'm asking does it count if he is scratched.

I wasn't a fan of sending Kapanen and Sundqvist back to Europe (especially Sundqvist since a year burns off his ELC anyways), but calling up Kapanen, who probably isn't ready for the NHL in the first place, to help the Penguins bow out in the first round in 5 games instead of 4 seems like a waste. With that being said, if they get 9 games before the ELC kicks in, might as well use them and see what you got. Not like they're going to come close to playing 9 games in the playoffs.

Im not convinced he can help an hnl team at this point. As i mentioned when he came over, i think hes just here to start playing with wbs. Hes probably an ahler for at least the rest of the 2015 calendar year.

How is Sundqvist's team doing in the playoffs? I'd like to see him come to North America for the playoffs as well.

Sundqvist has 5 points and a plus-5 in 9 games, playing top six minutes and special teams time. His team, Skelleftea, swept their first round series vs. Brynas, stomped Linkping in 5...they play Vaxjo for the championship starting on the 12th.

Awesome. I'd expect nothing but success from a team with Janne Pesonen and Rob Schremp.

They've been the odds on favorite to win the whole shebang for most of the season believe it or not...easily the best team in the league...Kirill Kabanov is there too...
