The posts on this board are getting dumber than those on lgp... and if people are just trying to be funny, then they are failing at that as well.

I don't think anyone but meow and I posed anything remotely hockey related in this thread...so are you referring to that or to the Seinfeld reference...?

Good riddance. All you need to be a back up is not let in 5+ goals every start.

7.5 GPG, to be precise.

That was fast. Shat the bed 1 game (or 7 goals) too much. He seems much older than 34. Is there a 'prime' age for a goalie before the wheels completely fall off?

Well, Niemi was never really good to begin with...so prime is debatable...
It's tough because there are no really reliable goalie stats out there...26 seems to be the magic age where big goalies get it...and considering it's a big goalies league now, 26 to 30 makes sense as a prime...meow might have different thoughts, but just ignore them, he's a goalie who can't even lift up three year olds...

First of all, I was able to lift him. I used my groin and back in an awkward jerky motion like you are suppose to.Well, Niemi was never really good to begin with...so prime is debatable...

Second of all, goalie prime (like the rest of the league) is trending younger and younger. I'd say maybe 24-27 is prime now.

Brodouche and Hasek were freaks, but I would say elite goalies maintain their level of play until their mid-30s.
Luongo and Ryan MIller are 38 and 37 respectively. Are they elite? Hmmm.

Nothing between 24 and 27 is prime. Mikey is correct as 29 is certainly prime.

Miller was elite for a noteworthy length of time? I don't recall that. I guess coming out of the lockout on that stacked Buffalo team he was good, I know he had a Vezina season against a bunch of nobodies...but I'm not sure he was ever elite...and he hasn't been at all relevant and mostly not useful since that Vezina/Olympic season...
I do think the prime age is trending younger, particularly for forwards...I still think the bigger goalies take a little while longer...I'd have to break it down goalie by goalie and see if any correlation comes around...but it would have to be mostly from memory, as most goalie stats are not telling of ability (except for Niemi's this year...he has a negative save pct., that's about right)...smaller goalies, like Jaroslav Halak, meow is probably right on...I'd guess that his best was right around 24-27, some of those Montreal years were so good that it nearly ousted Carey Price of all things...

Niemi is only 34? He looks like a drunk 50 year old stumbling around the crease.

Is there a drunk 50 year old available to backup Murray? Asking for a friend.

Looking at some ages here, 28 seems to be the money shot with goalie age now

The LA Kings held open tryouts a month ago for an emergency back up goalie. I had a buddy go and try but he reported back that he was not in any type of shape to play at a high level and he never made it past warm up drills. He also said that a beer league slapshot and professional league slapshot leave very different shades of color to any type of bruising.

I thought someone posted some fancy stats a year or so ago saying basically that goalies reach their peak at age 27, and while their decline may be gradual or sudden, they almost never post better numbers after age 27.

I would reckon that the "bell curve" in terms of productivity is a bit flatter than it is for forwards, and about the same as it is for defensemen.

I can confirm the puck burn anecdote above. My roommate in college was the team goalie. He had the priveledge of being able to practice with the Nailers a couple times and showed me his pads. The LA Kings held open tryouts a month ago for an emergency back up goalie. I had a buddy go and try but he reported back that he was not in any type of shape to play at a high level and he never made it past warm up drills. Just the difference from college players to ECHL guys was noticeable in a big way. I can only imagine what the difference up to the NHL is like.
