And what has Lovejoy done but be extremely steady?
He was steady right after the trade. The last group of games he's been average or below average. He does nothing special for this team.

You guys don't seem to look at reality. This group of D sucks.
Hmph, complete opposite opinion of him for me...I thought he was a little goofy right after the trade, but since then he's been terrific...our most physical d-man right now, best around the net too...and the lone RHS on the blueline...

This group might be missing a piece, but it definitely doesn't suck...not even close really...and they've done a good job for much of the year...

Pens are 13-4-2 after the ASG with Malkin and Crosby in the lineup.

Without at least 1 of them? 3-9-1.

Since the beginning of the year? 37-16-8 with both, 5-9-3 without one of them.

Just a fun stat.

So what you are saying is they are a great hockey team when the players they are built around are in the lineup?

That alone is reason for at least some optimism if those two can stay healthy. Crosby is at a different level, and Malkin sounds like he's an angry dog just waiting to be released.

This team has such a weak constitution you might as well call it the articles of confederation.
This is the best penguins related thing to happen today ever.
Simply fantastic. Well done, SDD. :thumb:

The defense right now sucks.

Letang, Martin, ehrhoff, maatta, lovejoy and cole is a very good unit, however

Lovejoy isn't Despres so he is a target. I mean I get it, most people(including me) liked Despres. I still think the trade was uncesessary, and would rather have Despres I guess, but at the end of the day it's not that big of a deal. It is what it is, and Lovejoy has been fine here in his second go around IMO.
The trade made sense if one were looking for the team to go deep in the playoffs - I'd much prefer Lovejoy's steadiness and experience in the playoffs. But if this team isn't even going to make the playoffs, it would have been better to hold on to Despres and give him more time to develop.

Even if you toss out Maatta due to his early injury, the D is still very good.

Problem is that 3 of the original top 4 are hurt. Lovejoy or Cole likely wouldn't be here if Maatta wasn't hurt.

I said earlier in the thread... my bigger concern is the 5-6 forwards on a nightly basis who could be replaced by pretty much anyone without losing much.

Crosby, Malkin, Hornqvist, Sutter <--- pretty much the only forwards providing anything impactful on a regular basis right now. Maybe you can add Winnik to that list. The forwards this year look like the defense under DB - lost.
