To trade either (IMO), you'd need a 2nd-line center replacement at the minimum (even if it's McDavid/Eichel). Sutter is not a 2nd-line center. I initially would have suggested Arizona as a target for Vermette, Ekman-Larsson, & a 1st (or add more). That's no longer viable, and I would not trade for Hanzal or Gagner. Domi is not a viable replacement. Edmonton doesn't have the replacement either.

Florida makes the most sense to me - they need a pull for the franchise to bring fans in. However, I'd trade for prospects instead of draft picks. Barkov, Hayes, & Grimaldi for whoever as a starting point. Was debating between Barkov & Bjugstad.

But I still wouldn't trade either.

Vermette is a UFA at seasons end.

I know. Pens have the space to sign him (if they chose). He'd be a short-term 2nd line center replacement. Either way, ARZ traded Vermette, so it doesn't work anymore.

Mike Fisher is a UFA...
He is going to turn 35, and there is no chance he leaves Nashville.

Not to mention he was never more than a 3rd line center being miscast in a higher role.

Well that's good, cause we still need a 3rd line center.

I'm going on faith that they will make the playoffs.
Having said that, I'm setting the over/under on playoff wins at three....and taking the under.

If ever a team could find a way to lose a series in just three total games it would be this team. This will be one of those sweeps where the Pens lead or were tied for all but 10 total minutes

If we get there, I like our chances...especially if Letang is back sooner than later. They'll lose game 1 like they seemingly always do, then adjustments will be made. It's hard for MJ to make adjustments between games during just random opponents. This team seemingly plays up to the level of the competition they're facing (and down). There are no scrubs in the playoffs and I think everyone in that room knows it. So even if there's been some complacency going on in the locker room throughout the year, I think that'll be fixed the first time they're slapped in the playoffs.

right now on 5dimes we're +1650 to win the Cup and +650 to win the East. That's better than the Bruins, Caps and Wings.

Rags are leading both, obviously.

If we somehow win the East, that'll feel like a bigger challenge than facing any team from the West for the cup.

It's just so odd............... I know the points system has been this way for some time now (basically since shootouts), but I never thought the NHL would change so much that a fanbase could spiral into a full on panic over a team that can still finish the year with 100 points.

The first year the Pens won the Cup, they won the Patrick Division with 88 points.

With Sid and Geno yet another year older, this is what the Pens' fanbase has become:

From a pure entertainment/spectacle standpoint, I'm hoping for a matchup against the Habs.

The Canadian media will be pumping up their tires so much at the prospect of tearing down the once mighty Penguins....would be fun.

To answer the original question, the Pens need to do anything they can to get back into the draft.

This question is like asking which eyeball I'd prefer removing -- both options are terrible, and fortunately never going to happen.
