Hypothetically, if the team that has the 1st overall pick and they came to you, as the GM, and said we will take Crosby or malkin. you chose who you give us. Who would you send, assuming you accepted?
Crosby and I definitely would accept. McDavid is can't-miss, and you'd have an extra 5 million a year to spend elsewhere for the next 3 years. That's a very good forward or a #2 or 3 defenseman.

I'd make 'em eat a crappy contract though. Maybe Sid's buddy Kunitz can go or Scuds or bofe.

While thinking about trading Crosby/Letang/Malkin/MAF is absurd, how can anyone expect to provide any of those players with a supporting cast with that much cap room spent on those 4?

That's where I think the biggest win happens when you trade a player of that ilk. Sure, you're going to get draft picks and some players back in the deal - but the value gained in the cap space allows you to support the remaining players.

If you're trading all of your draft picks, you're relying on FA and trades to support those players, obviously that strategy hasn't been a winning one.
Lolol "draft picks"

The problem is they continuously overpay for average and below average players.

Having a lot of money tied up in those 4 players isn't even particularly out of line with many other successful teams. It does mean you can't sign people like scuderi and Adams to money and term

And Lapierre and Spaling... that's 3.4 million that can easily be replaced for 1.4

I liked Spaling but man he's been absolutely useless the last 20 games.

This exactly. Look at all the "dead" money this year:
Ehrhoff
Kunitz
Dupuis (LTIR, so kind of helps but they didn't have the money in the off season)
Lapierre (a trade but 1.2 is unnecessary considering he provides less than Goc, which is hard to comprehend)
Spaling (not particularly bad but he's redundant and overpaid if he's on the 4th line as a winger)

Perron was useless the last month
Scuderi I almost don't list here b/c at least he played all year and was consistent despite the fact he should be replaced by someone 1/2 as much

You can't afford so many "misses" in a single year when Sid, Malkin, Letang, and MAF make what they do.

We need 3 cheap young energy/annoyances on the 4th line, not $4m in generic hockey. Kunitz CANNOT play this bad for 3.8m. And I have to assume Ehrhoff and Maatta being injured helped lead to Despres going for Ben freaking Lovejoy instead of an asset at forward.

To be fair "useless the last 20 games" describes most everyone outside of Sid, Malkin, Sutter, and Hornqvist when it comes to offense.

Hey guys, since we're getting a top pick if we miss playoffs, would you rather have McDavid or Eichel? I am just thankful we still have our first round pick.

How do people not remember that we don't have a first round pick?

What do the Pens need to do to make the playoffs? Win at least one of the last two games?

Thanks.

I'm not feeling too confidant given that information.

The funniest thing is Ottawa now plays a Rangers team with nothing to play for and a Philly team that could lose on purpose to keep the Pens out.

Rossi pretty much said that the Pens wont have both Crosby and Malkin on the roster next season. That neither have respect for the coach or the team that has been put around them......

"Doug MacLean is on 590 right now floating the idea that, if Pittsburgh misses the playoffs, a Malkin for Kessel+ deal is a possibility."
