I don't even know what this means but it's not really something you want to read about a player with his history and on a 35+ deal.

Nearly miss the playoffs because your best players are on IR?

Sounds like a badly executed version of the Tampa model.

this level of transparency between management and players is refreshing. it’s a churched up version of “this dude was bad. he knows he was bad. we all need to work together to get him better”

basically a sports PIP

I assume that's primarily based on this year being regarded as a weak class? As in 14 this year is still worth less than 32 next year... even with that extra development year?
Well, I'd likely give this pick away even if it was like 8th...

Look, outside of this being a bad draft class. There's just no good likelihood that we can better than this next year. On March 23rd, we were sitting at 8th overall. Sid set the mark for best season at age 36 in history. Just move on from the pick and get it over with.

Maybe we'll get fortunate and end up with 31 or 32 from Carolina - which I think has a fair degree of likelihood. I'm not sure the quality of player (and maybe it's the same player) at 14 would be much different than 31.
To that end, how different would the quality of player (and maybe it's the same player) be at 31 vs 44 (where the pick is now).

We'll have 44 and 46. The best outcome of getting to 31 might be the fact that we could potentially move up from there if needed
I would expect in most drafts that the player on your list that you'd select at 31 is the one that would be there at 44.

Real life examples (names/teams/draft years removed) of ranking vs actual selection:
Team rank: 29th; drafted 50th overall.
Team rank: 30th; drafted 47th overall.
Team rank: 33rd; drafted 56th overall.

And it goes all over depending on the situation. I had a player who was a ND (no draft) from about November onwards through the end of the season...he was taken in the first round a couple years ago.

I have a player at #3 on my American list right now that many people don't have in their top 100 overall (although, he's starting to catch on).

I don't have to tell you, it's all over the place. The whole "consensus" thing is complete hogwash...that's just media lists and mom's basement scouts trying to parrot each other without really doing the work. Unfortunately, that's what's available to a lot of people and they take it as gospel. "Oh, that's great value! He was ranked 12th European skater and we took him at 104...great value!" Yeah, ok...sure...that's not really a ranking, that's just a watchlist. It's not........whatever. Be prepared to be disappointed haha

Good chance to really evaluate other players up close and get to know them. Smart move for a team that's going to need some outside help...

with a player like Graves, how do you even “coach him up” at this point? he’s old enough to have inertia in his play style and unfortunately that style is “being bad”. No defensive awareness, not quick enough to recover and doesn’t really do anything offensively

You can't really do much with him...you mostly just have to try to insulate his weaknesses and simplify his game. If he only has two things that he can do on the ice, he becomes predictable for the other guys on the ice. It can make everyone look better.

Just like if I was pitching to you and I said, "I only have two pitches...a fastball and a curveball...I only throw strikes" - your life gets much easier, because you have far fewer variables to account for.

Doing some research for project. The Penguins got a league-low one point from players on entry-level contracts this year. Jack St. Ivany's lone assist in 14 games and Samuel Poulin's 0 points in 3 games also made us among the bottom of the league in entry-level games played (17). It appears the Avs had only 14. Then it's Vegas at 49.

Those are the only three that I can find under 50.

I have at least 20 teams that are over 150.

...17.

Yeah, even without 1st round picks, the Pens drafts have been atrocious.

Am I the only one who likes the Karlsson trade even now, one year after it? We lost 14th overall, which is bad. And we lost Legare, who I am mot sure will be an NHLer.
But we got Karlsson that is still a good player and hopefully rebounds next year. Additionally, we got rid of Granlund, Ruutta and CDS. I would have traded Legare to get rid of those contracts any time I would get that offer.
Edit. We also lost Petry, who I liked before he played for us... and still do to some extent.

The trade allowed us to dump a bunch of junk. That alone is a win. EK was fine. He started shooting more over the last 2-3 weeks. Get the PP clicking and the whole vibe around EK and the team as a whole will improve. That’s priority number 1 for me.

Like I've said, that's the first trade you make in a video game. A bunch of 74s, a 78, and a 1st for a star. Even if he falls off a cliff in three years, it's a good idea...and it has worked out very well...

Nice to hear that I am not too way off with my thoughts.

If I coached, I would probably ask EK to set up the powerplay that he wants and run it through him. I know it is Sid's team, but EK has to be one of the best PP specialists in this Era.
If Sid, Malkin and Letang complains, I would let them run PP1a and EK PP1b with almost equal PP time.
It is a video game solution, but the PP was crap this season and unless that changes, some alternatives should be considered/ attempted.

I don't think 87 or 71 would complain about anything that Karlsson had input on tactically...provided he wasn't asked at all last year...

I didn't really mind ruutta or petry 2 years ago. EK is much more talented though, and Granlund blew chunks with a terrible contract. That trade certainly isn't why the Pens were bad.

Hopefully a new assistant coach to work with the PP, 3v3, and 4v4 will help get EK going a bit more because there is no reason he shouldn't be excelling in those areas.

being reminded of what we got does make it feel better but it’s such a ridiculous coincidence that our PP tanks once we get one of the best PP guys of the last 15 years

like I’m not even blaming him or anything. It’s just a bummer seeing it look so worthless for such long stretches. So that negative feeling is hard to separate how I feel about the trade

but if we can turn it around next season then we’ll all forget about how bad it was this season
