So this is the first real money deal of this little flat cap blip we're in...we'll see if it's the trendsetter for these type of deals...
Really makes me wonder what the team’s money situation is like. Getting $5.1MM in salary off the books was obviously the priority given that a buyout would have been more cap friendly.

Pretty sure they're on the hook for half of that 5.1

Correct me if I'm wrong.

A buyout would have put a cap hit of 1.75 on the books for this coming season and next.

How does this trade retaining half for one season make it worse than buying out?

Someone on HF boards said this saves about 875k in real money

By getting free cap space back for us...?

Saw an article saying he wants to shed money for free agency. That's terrifying

50%? Holy **** Jim. Did you fat finger 20% typing up the email to the league?
I also saw that he is due $5M in actual salary this year. Creating dead cap space to reduce costs?

I don't think you can feel too strongly about this unless somehow you love Bjugstad and thought he would rebound. There was no real use or place for him here...even when he played he was a zero...he's a big guy with back problems...so he either wasn't gonna play, was gonna get bought out, or was gonna cost an asset to move in-season...

Instead, we got $2 mil in cap space and more than that in real cash and a potential late round pick just in case he somehow does something he probably hasn't done in years...play.

Little more dead cap this year by a small amount, no dead cap next year as Beveridge has been pointing out...flat cap scenario, a team that needed some breathing room...

If anything, GMJR used political capital to make this happen and that's the worst part of it...and I'm not even convinced of that, as I think Jugs was Guerin's idea here...

This is the way I look at it. If I'm another GM, I'm not trading anything of value for a guy who's cap his is 4+, hasn't had a healthy season in several years, while my cap remains flat. Heck, I'm not even going to give anything of value for half of that.

So if you're Rutherford, you have 4 options.

1. Keep him and his 4+ cap hit.
2. Bury him for the season and only save 1+.
3. Buy him out and have 1.75 dead cap this year and next
4. Trade at maximum retain and have 2+ dead cap this year

So unless you want to gamble he'll be on LTIR before the season even begins to hide the entire cap, this is probably the best option when you're looking at the next 2 years. And at this point in time, the "window" isn't much more than that.

If anything, this is Billy G doing us a favor.

Guys. You’re looking at this all wrong. The LTIR was the best choice. Simple. On the first day of camp, have a masked individual - of which we have no shortage of now - hit him in the back with a tire iron. Boom. Problem solved.

Tire iron? Just give him a pair of skates and that should do it

First bump of a check during practice: LTIR

But being serious, I don’t think many teams, especially smaller market teams like the Pens are going to use that LTIR space often this year. It’s real money and that’s as important as the cap now.

Looks conceivable that one of our local guys went: [player]-[player]-Tanev-Blugers-ZAR

Also, 1st place vote for Auston Matthews should get your card revoked...

But I was told all those fancy numbers say ZAR is one of the greatest defensive forwards in the league. Why he at 25???

Some folks definitely went with some of the questionable defensive metrics out there...that's why Val Nichushkin ended up as the #2 winger in Selke voting, for instance...

If you voted for Blueger Tanev ZAR you should lose your voting privileges.

Not saying they're not good defensive forwards, but JFC you are an embarrassment.
