FYI: Book about the first 25 years of the team...https://t.co/gCKmpJQeJ1?amp=1
Heard about it through the Society of International Hockey Research...don't have it yet, but some here may well be interested, as there isn't a ton readily known about the team before Mario...

I know I'm way late but would you really take McDavid and Kurri over Messier?

Considering that Messier is a Vancouver legend, yes.

Yeah, it's tough to say that Messier's 12 season career value wouldn't be better than Kurri's...and I guess to keep it fresh, they put McDavid on now and maybe they wanted a winger to match with Jagr...? I don't know it's a lot of hoops to jump through...
mikey's Thread of Penguin Randomness
I'd take Messier over Kurri.

Yeah, I think that's a lay-up on all-time sense, certainly. You would have to really squint to get Kurri over Messier in just Oilers time too...but I could maybe twist an argument if someone gave me some money...
mikey's Thread of Penguin Randomness
With Messier I might switch my vote.

Well, let's just take a quick look...
Edmonton has:
Gretzky: #1 player ever - even with just his time in Edmonton, he has a case. If he retires 8/9/88, he has that case.
Messier: Probably about the 15th to 30th best player of all time. I have him a little bit on the higher side of that. Naturally, he had 12 years in Edmonton and did some good stuff with the Rangers the first time around. Without his time after '92 (?), he's certainly not up in the 20ish area...I don't know where he is though.
Kurri: Probably the 60th-90th best player of all time. He was not super super noteworthy outside of Edmonton though. He had 1993 and a swan song in the '98 Olympics, but he's not dropping a ton.
Coffey: Really polarizing. Probably the 35th to 80th best player of all time. I have him around 50. Only 7 seasons in Edmonton. 4 though in Pittsburgh. He's a wash to a man. But he's a better Oiler than he was a Penguin obviously. So...I don't know where you go there, if anywhere...
Lowe: Ugh...on the plus side, it's easy, outside of '94 with the fake Oilers, he's a career Oiler. I don't know what he is...was he really more impactful than Kristopher Letang all-time...? Probably not. Neither of them are top 250 players of all time. You probably start to pick up my interest in the 300ish area maybe. They're probably a wash. I'm not sure Letang isn't better though already and that's with more career to go.
Fuhr: Probably the 20th to 35th best goalie of all time, somewhere in that wide range. He had a few seasons outside Edmonton that help his legacy though. So that would drop him at least towards the lower side of that range.
Incomplete: McDavid. I mean, what can you do, it's been five years or whatever. He's been the best player in the league for the last couple, ya figure...
##
Pittsburgh has:
Lemieux: #4 player ever, maybe #3 I suppose. In terms of career value at least. Probably the most technically skilled player ever. But, like Orr, just not enough of the good stuff.
Jagr: Probably about the 10th to 20th best player ever. But man, is that ever tricky. He spent as many NHL seasons as a Pen as he didn't. And there's some major seasons outside of here. Without non-Pittsburgh time, he's got a leg up on Kurri still...but not Messier.
Crosby: Still incomplete, but he's already up in the 8 to, I don't know 13, 14 area I'd say squinting. He left a lot of meat on the bone. But it's all ours at least.
Coffey: We covered.
Letang: We covered enough for an incomplete, probably a wash with Lowe at the worst.
Fleury: Hmmm...boy, I have a lot of time for him, but he's tough to place. I guess you could go all the way from 30 to like 60 or 70 probably depending on what you like. He's definitely on the lower side of that when you lose the Vegas part of his career though.
So, the defense is a wash let's say for ease. Edmonton has a fairly slight, but clear advantage in net. The Penguins have better forward depth. It's tight. We're gonna score our problems away, as per team history. The Oilers will be able to keep the puck out of their net better with Kurri or Messier...pretty tough, even after this...

Ugh... you don't actually have Gordie Howe in as #2 right? Please say that you don't have Howe in as #2.

Bobby Orr, obviously.

Yeah, it's Orr. 1970 Bobby Orr is the best player I've ever seen play hockey. If we got even 10 years of that, I'd take that over 20 years of Gretzky...but Orr just didn't play enough...
Howe is the one where I usually go at 3 because the career value is insane. 21 straight years of being top-5 in scoring. Physical. Played defense. Insane peak too. He had it all. Mr. Hockey...

Okay, you said "Lemieux: #4 player ever, maybe #3 I suppose. In terms of career value at least. Probably the most technically skilled player ever. But, like Orr, just not enough of the good stuff." so I thought that you had Orr at 3/4. but if you have Lemieux at 4, Gretzky 1, Orr 2, who is 3?
