I imagine if an injury free scenario ever exists (please), we're probably looking at a lineup of:

Zucker-Crosby-Simon*
McCann-Malkin-Rust
Kahun-Bjugstad-Hornqvist*
ZAR-Blueger-Tanev

Dumo-Letang
Pettersson-Schultz
Johnson-Marino

I would still like to jettison Jugs into the sun (probably an offseason move) and would like to see a depth move that puts us further away from Angello or Agozzino making a playoff appearance (preferably a RH center who can takes faceoffs on the PK), but that's a deep lineup with essentially two third lines operating in your bottom six.

How does (if it happens) 59's return for the playoffs change this?

I can't imagine Kahun not going back with Malkin and Rust. That trio was clicking.

If we are lucky to get Jake back and healthy, I roll

Zucker - Crosby - Jake
Kahun - Malkin - Rust
Simon - McCann - Hornqvist
ZAR - Blueger - Tanev

His injury timeline would put him back like conference finals at the earliest, correct? I think in a vacuum you would look at:

Guentzel-Crosby-Simon*
Zucker-Malkin-Rust
Kahun-Cans-Hornqvist*
Jugs-Blueger-Tanev

but Sid's potential for chemistry with Zucker plus the likelihood of conditioning issues with Guentzel probably puts him on a third line while getting spot duty with Sid.

In my perfect world GMJR finds a way to add Luke Glendening, Trevor Lewis, Ryan Carpenter, or Nick Shore (bargain bin option) to that forward group. Injuries notwithstanding I like the 8 defensemen we have and short of finding a way to add Sami Vantanen or Brenden Dillon, I don't know that there's a tangible difference maker on defense who can be added, though adding a degree of separation between Trotman would be nice.

Even if he may make it back by the ECF, I'd rather he rest it than potentially undo the rehab/hurt it again.

We saw what happened with Olli Maatta's shoulder and how long it took him to get back. Don't need that to happen to Guentzel.

Sadly, you are most likely correct. Even the 4-6 month timeline pushes his return into June. 80/20 we don't see him until next season, and if he does manage to make it back sooner than expected, not sure he will be anywhere close to 100% given the nature of his injury.

But Zucker was a good get, and GMJR might not be quite done yet. If the rest of the forwards are healthy come playoff time, it has the potential to be a very formidable group of forwards in all 3 zones.

Why would he be untouchable? The Pens are obviously not protecting both goalies in the expansion draft.

That said, I do think it would be good to hold on to both as long as possible.

We're apparently a contender...contenders don't trade their starting goalies or platoon goalie going into the playoffs...

And, who is to say what's going to happen in the expansion draft...maybe Murray doesn't do well, and it only costs us a 4th round pick to convince Seattle to take Pettersson or DeSmith or whatever and to leave Murray alone...

Either way, we're talking about this trade deadline and Jarry is completely untouchable...even going into this summer, I wouldn't make him available at all either...I'm surprised to even be discussing it...
