Having Ristolainen as the right side of your third pair would be, to me, having a guy capable, albeit not good at it, of playing 1st pair minutes. Limiting his minutes would limit his mistakes and probably showcase some of his talentsYeah, I'm not sure that I am...but without an identity, china shop bulls seem like a reasonable way to go...
I've been meaning to sit down and really try to figure out where he's at for my edification...but it's one of those things where nothing forces my hand to do so...we don't have him, none of my friends are Sabres fans, there's no need to gain a deeper knowledge on him haha - so it just gets backburnered...
He has not been good when pressed into big, heavy minutes though, that's for true...what I want to know if he could be salvaged playing a little lower in the lineup...having these roving bands of barbarians and miscreants around is one way that I would try to preserve and extend the life of Kristopher Letang, who I find essential to the process...

I get a sense of that too...but I keep going back to it, I'd really like to sit and watch him...maybe I'll stop being a little baby b*tch boy and do that tonight...because it'll just keep gnawing at me haha

He's got a 5.4 mil cap hit.
I'm not sure I'd like a 3rd pairing D man at that high of a hit, especially one whose metrics are barely exceeding Jack Johnson's.
At that point I'd rather just ride or die with Ruhwedel.

Ok, fine, now he's 2nd pairing...and Marino plays 3rd pairing making $900k and we'll give Marino one less shift...

Jankowski will wear 14 by the way...
ZAR has switched from 46 to 12
Rodrigues will wear 9 (I don't know that we gave him a number the first time)
Matheson is 5...

The point is 5.4MM is a steep cap hit for a guy who isn't good and needs to be sheltered.

I’d still rather try to somehow get Vatanen on a friendly deal if possible

So would I...the only thing is, you can't move money right now...(Nate Schmidt just went for a future 3rd round pick...in a real market, he's definitely worth a 1st), so if you're looking at all these one-way deals on the table on defense and think you can move one this offseason, you're probably mistaken...

Ok, I'd like to retract on Ristolainen talk...sorry. Jesus, what a mess...he's the same player he was at 19...
He's really bad at defense, worse than I even recall at casual watching and I had a low opinion from that...he's the kid that cheats on a test, but off the wrong kid. Like that kid had the same idea to cheat off the person next to them and they're both just banging out wrong answers all the live long day...
Nevermind. Wouldn't trade Pet-Pet for him, even with salary retained...sorry.

I mean, I know he's getting that big fat NHL paycheck twice a month...but I really wonder what his expectations are vs what they tell him...maybe I'll reach out, because I'm very curious about that...

I personally think GMJR wasn’t thinking we were going to be able to get a LHD like Matheson...or wasn’t planning on it at all. And when that was the best deal for hornquist, he took it. And the dominos began to fall with JJ being bought outI mean, I know he's getting that big fat NHL paycheck twice a month...but I really wonder what his expectations are vs what they tell him...maybe I'll reach out, because I'm very curious about that...
I still think Pettersson will be traded at some point. Maybe at the deadline to a team rebuilding for a 3C on an expiring contract or something.

Yeah, he's just wheelin and dealin...there's no real plan...
I suppose we got a little younger...but it was tough to get older...
I sent a note over to Riikola's agent just to see what he knows and if he wants to share...we have no prior interactions that I can recall, so we'll see what comes of it...

The Penguins have 7 dmen under (NHL) contract. Seems fairly standard.

Nothing crazy, but we have five LD that many such people believe are NHLers and we bought out a sixth...
Riikola's contract is multi-year, one-way, following very limited usage for the past two seasons...and he got 50% more than league min...there's a bit of a weird weight to the contract for me...just enough to make me curious...

Yeah, good points. I believe they envision Riikola maybe playing the right side. I think he did that before, didn't he?

Possibly...but not much more than he played at LW, right?

Probably not.
