mikey's Thread of Penguin Randomness
I’m with ya, boss. I didn’t think they’d win the series. I didn’t want to be proven correct in this fashion. They got beat again by an opportunistic team who had about 5 mins of offense per game but it was always the right 5 mins. It’s terrible to blow 3 3rd period leads and it sucks to have unlucky own goals happen twice to the same guy in close-out games. Once again, the PP playing Globetrotter-like on 5 on 3’s was a massive cog in the failure. But you have to be able to tack on and then close out a game. They somehow couldn’t.I think in the heat of the moment of each game I put a lot of the blame on injuries, 3rd string goalie, etc. What do you expect with that many key players missing? Surely the series ends in game 5 if Sid doesn’t get hurt, right? Or if DeSmith stays healthy?
Never expected to win the series before it started but once we got up 2-1 then 3-1 I thought we had a great change to take it and then likely get bounced by Carolina in Rd2.
Now that we are eliminated I don’t feel so generous/forgiving with the injury excuse. In the grand scheme, yes, injuries determined the outcome. But doing a game by game review, you can’t blow those leads. You can’t score 0 third period goals in those losses. You can’t have your PK crumble and look pathetic. You can’t allow 1:40 seconds of zone time on ever freaking PP. You can’t give the other team more shorthanded breakaways than shots you generate on your own PP. You can’t spend 3+ minutes on a 5-on-3 advantage over two games and record like 2 total shots. You can’t blow a 4-1 lead at home. You can’t blow 2-0 leads in back to back games to clinch. You have to hold on to the 1 goal lead with 5 min left in game 7. You can’t have Sid get injured and then give up 3 goals in 4 minutes in an elimination game.

Rob Rossi has a 4 month health scare and comes back spewing garbage immediately.

Nope. No freakin’ way.madden, who dismissed this earlier is now saying he's hearing it's true
We’re to believe Sid, of all people, would be held out for game 6 if he were medically cleared and there was no threat to his health?
And we’re to believe Hextall and Burke—two old school guys who’ve been there, done that in the playoffs—overrode the docs to handcuff their coach in an elimination game where momentum had arguably swung toward the desperate Rangers? These guys would deprive the team of their leader and most critical asset needed to win the series sooner rather than later? It makes absolutely zero sense from multiple perspectives.
Sorry, that’s just soap opera stuff, and it’s the kind of s*** that makes a good portion of Pittsburgh sports media insufferable.
And regarding the Malkin and Letang contracts: We know damn well that Sid has never interfered in personnel decisions, so, yeah, after 16-17 years, he’s not about to start getting involved with other players’ negotiations.
Like it isn’t hard enough to believe that the season is over in such a craptacular manner, when six days ago they were looking like world beaters? We get to hear all this? A postmortem is one thing, shoveling heaps of manure on the grave is another.
/end rant

Very, very early ranking on the likelihood of players staying, based on what information is circulating now...
1. Malkin
2. Rust
3. Letang
4. Rakell
Obvious disclaimers apply, of course...but I think that's about where we're at at this moment in time...

I get not paying Letang what he *reportedly* wants. But we're going to have a heck of a time replacing him

What does he want? 9x5?

That order is probably the exact opposite of what I would like to see happen.

I don't know that he had more than a point in the playoffs, but I thought he was good in the postseason in a small sample...simple game, got in lanes, provided some speed, and some forecheck. He actually played more of the game that I expected from McGinn...McGinn just had the one good game, in my opinion...
I don't know that there's a market for Zucker anyhow, so I doubt it matters...

with Trotz and DeBoer being fired I wouldn’t be surprised if Sully gets canned
I absolutely don’t agree with it if it happens but for whatever reason in the NHL coaches have the shortest of all leashes
ok slight correction: found this article from 2008 that claims that NBA coaches have slightly shorter leashes https://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/20/spor ... aches.html

I remember last year thinking Zucker was one of the only ones getting to dirty areas. Like the anti-McCann. And here we are again. So that's two playoffs in a row I've liked what he brings. More of those guys, assuming he doesn't break in half by next year, please
