If you have a contract spot open, I see no reason to roll the dice on a free prospect... especially with the Pens prospect pool.
Simply looking at stats, Graf has about the same production as Archibald did in college... both were more productive than Rust. These kids are still developing, so sometimes you take a chance. If scouting was 100% accurate, there'd be a lot more coat hangers in the world.

When I first read that, my mind immediately went, "wow, that's a really good abortion joke" and then I realized it was about me and Dumo and thought, "well, that's just as good" haha
We're only at 47 contracts, so it's fine...no reason not to. But if I was limited (which I'd consider every contract to be an asset, because this isn't a field of 50...you have far fewer to really exercise), I'd look at guys that I thought might be NHLers...like, I'd probably take a shot at Lynden Breen or Ryan Kirwan before Graf or Hyrckworian or whoever...or even waiting until 8/15 to see what shakes loose, if I feel like Sam Colangelo and Anaheim aren't gonna work out, I'd be into that. Hell, I'd give a late pick to make sure that I could. I'd give Patrick Moynihan a look, etc.

How has no one mentioned the best defensive forward in the history of the sport?

It's a faux pas to mention him because Sullivan was the only coach that got anything out of him when he was just starting in the league...which is against the internet current...

Kunitz was also great

Kunitz was also not a Pens CUFA signing within the last ~ 15 years

After I submitted it, I was really hoping you wouldn't take offense as it was meant as a joke, just at your expense. I very, very, very much appreciate your insight regarding prospects, and I think you do a great job identifying talent (I also wish you worked for the Pens to be honest). How that talent gets developed is always tough to project, though. When I first read that, my mind immediately went, "wow, that's a really good abortion joke" and then I realized it was about me and Dumo and thought, "well, that's just as good" haha
As you mentioned, there are probably some other potential players that they can go with, but I don't think the contract limit is gonna prevent any of our current prospects from making a jump, so I have no issues taking a shot.

-3 behind Detroit same GP (head to head)
-4 behind Philly with 1 game in hand
Need to pass 3 of them

Game against the Caps on Thursday is huge.

I'd no longer give EK a B for the season, in case you were wondering. 0 + 3 in his last 18 games before last night.

bumping this (not to start a debate about Jarry but purely out of curiousity)
I also appreciate how difficult it is to adjudicate goalies, either way, because of the variables (the team playing in front of him, the quality of the shots, etc). Honestly, how do Vezina voters typically decide who they’re gonna vote for? Is it mostly stat based?

Vezina is voted by the GMs since 1982 (IIRC). So, they're less likely to use stats than the media. But it depends on how seriously they want to take the voting.

yeah I get that but it's not really realistic for a GM to watch and compare 32+ goalies. I would guess that a GM casts their ballot with a combo of these methods:
- they delegate it to a goalie scout/group of scouts
- they go by stats
- they watch as many games as they can and go by feel
but I guess I would be interesting to hear a GM breakdown how they make their vote

well you don't need to compare 32 goalies. there are only about 10-12 that are serious contenders and it's not rocket science to see who the best 3 or so are

The Sullivan Derangement Syndrome is pretty unreal outside of this board...check out this gem...
This will be one of the better rosters to miss the playoffs in nhl history. Truly a testament to Sullivan.
