Darren Dreger
@DarrenDreger
Looking more like Matt Hunwick is on the trade block with Ian Cole playing 17-18 mins per game. Pens need cap space to acquire a forward
IMO, Cole is unquestionably the better defenseman and pairs nicely with Oleksiak. There's no way in hell he's re-signing for Hunwick money after the season, but I guess we'll worry about that when the time comes.
Yeah, I don't imagine they'd have trouble finding essentially a #6 d-man.

Hunwick is just a salary dump for now and the future. I think it’s clear that he provides limited value to the Pens.

Yeah, his game seems to have fallen off a cliff after coming back from that concussion. Shame.

I think, for the first time, I can picture this team post-sid and it's not a dystopian nightmare.

I mean, I get what they were trying to do with Hunwick. He re-imaged his game to be more reliable, it cost him some offensive upside (as it tends to do with players that can only really push in one direction...not multi-skilled) and here we are. Paying two bills for three years on a veteran third pairing defenseman doesn't negatively effect much...

I wasn't all that impresses by Hunwick when he was healthy and getting play time.

I don't think he was supposed to be impressive.

He moves well and moves the puck well. I'm glad we have him as a #7/8.

I didn't follow Kessel closely until he came here. Is this playmaking role new for him?

Also noticing less unforced errors this year. He's not losing the puck because of stick handling flubs like he has been for the last 2 seasons.

Yeah, we brought him in for mobility on the back line. I'm sure we saw some puck skills if our pro scouts looked back far enough...those have largely eroded away in the hopes of him playing more regularly in the NHL...I'm pretty comfortable with our defense at this point, if we add someone, it better be an impact guy...we don't need another 5/6/7 guy like we've added in the past...with Hunwick and Ruhwedel unable to crack the lineup, those are NHL players already, we don't need to get in on that...focus on improving other aspects of the club...and then you can have one of those two step in next year when Cole leaves...

Later in his time in Toronto he really got good at dishing...

Stickhandling flubs are product angle-change shooting off the toe...less pressure to shoot on every rush, more solid footing for stickhandling...

at 2.25 for this season and the next two, no thanks. I'd rather have Ruh at <800k

Pens still need to entertain unloading Letang+ for Karlsson.

I’d be fine with Letang + Sprong + 1 pick; that would be enough to appease gullible Senators fans: Get two cup runs out of Karlsson and relieve the Pens of four more seasons of a brain dead defenseman.

Thoughts on Patrick Sharpe for 3rd/4th line center/wing depth?
