That's correct (×2)

I don't think anyone said they were problems currently. But this very well could be the last year that they AREN'T problems and they may miss the playoffs. Feels like an opportunity may be wasted.Ok so Malkin is a top 3 second line center, or probably a top 15-20 center in general
My point still stands though that Letang and Malkin aren’t problems and neither are their contracts

Exactly. Precisely

I thought that was how the conversation where people were justifying their contracts for this year. They're not the problem(s) it's everyone around them currently.

Missing the playoffs because GMRH can't be arsed to go shopping for a capable backup would be a sad state of affairs.

April 13, 2023 all we'll need is a win in OT against CBJ but Jarry will be injured again and DeSwiss will lose it in the SO. mark it down.

How many more points do the Pens have at this point with a capable backup? 4-6 maybe? That puts them in so much of a better position
mikey's Thread of Penguin Randomness
Probably more than that.

In the last ten games, he has four games where he gave up five goals and took the L. The Pens were lucky enough to get two OTL points out of those.
This doesn't include the 7-6 OT game vs FLA last week or the game vs VAN where he gave up three goals on five shots and was eventually pulled.

As much as it's on DeSmith too - let's not forget the Pens proclivity for giving up a goal a minute in because they allow like 4-5 breakaways a game. While I want to pile on DeSmith - it really feels like a team effort on most nights.

Whether Hextall is shopping for a third-liner isn’t known, but if he makes any deal, Burke was adamant that it wouldn’t be simply to shake up the Penguins, to try to instill the urgency and focus that often has been missing this season.
“(Hextall) is looking hard, but not to shake the team up,” he said. “We like our group. It’s a tight group. We like them. We’re not looking to make a trade to jar them awake, but it often has that effect, a trade, where it shakes up a team. So it can be therapeutic, but that’s not the intent, why we’re looking at it.”

I dont disagree. Guys need to dig deep and execute and be mentally engaged the whole time, not just when they remember. Top to bottom. For every malkin turnover there's a poehling forgetting to cover the best goal scorer in the history of the sport

This team had two exceptional playoff performances and lost both due *exclusively* to shortcomings at the goalie position. This, despite an aging roster and a ton of man games lost to injury. Games like the 7-6 Florida win happen and it's just the ebb and flow of a long regular season. Mental lapses happen, and so do stretches of poor defensive play. That said, DeSmith has been remarkably bad the past few weeks. He has lost more games than he has won in his Pens career, despite the team posting very good winning percentages prior to this season. Obtaining a backup goaltender is a trade out of absolute necessity IMO. If for no other reason than the fact that Jarry can't seem to stay healthy. It's up to management to figure out the cap situation, but it's all for nothing if they continue to start CDS.

I mean, it's probably not a fit in general...but with Demko, you only get so many games before the deadline to figure out if he's going to be healthy enough to continue this season. So, if we're trying to combat injury-riddled Jarry - you don't check off a box. And if it turns out that this is a serious hip/mobility/athleticism injury, then you're not checking off being better than DeSmith...

At $5M a year for 3 more years, sign me the F up.
Except that would mean Jarry goes to free agency. The goalies are pretty equal to one another. If Demko were healthy and you could deal impending UFA jarry while acquiring low cost controllable Demko, that could be a decent move.
But not sure it makes sense as of this moment. Maybe after the season?
