He makes a decision mid-flight to throw the blocker up. You only ever see a glove only dive or a two arm dive. He starts with glove only then recognizes he ain’t getting it and chucks the blocker at it. Absolutely bonkers stuff.

I feel that American goalies are much more likely to make a save like that because so many have backgrounds in baseball and football. That was much more like a shortstop changing his glove location on a bad bounce. Or a receiver making a play off a tip

Had a bit of a laugh seeing Sceviour listed there after he scored, though I wouldn't care if somebody claimed him.

That’s a broad brush, but not too far off IMO. Americans are typically battlers and athletes. Canadians are textbook guys. Finns have active hands. Russians might as well have two blockers.

Even the first bit of recognition that the puck was shifting and getting his body to go the other way. I don’t see goalies move like that very much.

Great save, but I wonder if that was even goal bound.

I wonder if Riikola hopes to get claimed.
One of the weirdest player chronicles I can remember and I’m surprised his agent didn’t try to get him nudged out the door for a better opportunity after his rookie year.

Comes to the NHL at an advanced age, signs a one year ELC, spends most of the season in the NHL looking capable but is seemingly not trusted by the coaching staff and plays in less than half the games. Decides to re-up with the same franchise as a RFA on a one-way deal instead of going back home to Finland, looks capable but is seemingly not trusted by the coaching staff and plays in less than half the games.

After the financial windfall of two NHL seasons, is again a RFA inside a franchise with a GM who likes him and a head coach who doesn’t. Signs a two-year deal that comes with a $300k per year raise, or a little less than half the salary given to also recently extended Ruhwedel who is similarly seldom played but more trusted by the coaching staff. GM proceeds to acquire LHD that fall higher in the pecking order, has to wait a couple games for his shot at the start of the season, plays two games but is seemingly not trusted by the coaching staff, gets long term injury, GM who likes him quits, coaching staff has excuse to never play him again, new GM acquires his own personal defensive pet, entire organization forgets he exists. Has played in 39% of NHL games during his contract, collecting $2.5MM with another year on the books.

Surprised it's 39%. Would've guessed maybe 20%. Would probably be 5% if not for all the injuries.
