I like Sutter but that is a large price tag, and still no guarantee we're moving out JJ/other salary, which is the big "no" for this deal.

Ok, so, knowing your very strong stance on JMFJ...what if making this move assured us to buying out Jack...? In some weird universe, those transactions are just linked at the hip...does change your opinion to a smaller "no" or even a tacit yes...?

It makes it slightly more palatable, but I'm still not 100% sold because of the cap hit involved with Sutter.
Beyond moving Johnson out, there's still the Murray/Jarry question mark...
Give me a sec. Going to do some CapFriendly shenanigans to see. Pens are currently at 6.13 mil of cap space.

Naturally, with the Johnson buyout and the acquisition of two RHS centers...you're free to liquidate Murray cleanly...so if you can get a 2 and a 3 for him, there's that...you don't have to pair him with a bad contract, you don't have to try to get a center back, etc. you can just move him clean...

Ignore line combos, I'm just going by however CF had them set up (which included a hole at 4C):
I made the assumption Jarry gets a modest raise to $3.75m, bought out Johnson, and did the trade as described (Sutter and rights to Gaudette for rights to Simon).
There still needs to be another shoe to drop. The roster, as shown, is not including any extension for any RFA that isn't already signed, which also includes Gaudette.
Not a lot of wiggle room. You'd almost have to hope you can throw Johnson in that deal, or find a deal where you aren't eating the 1.16m buyout penalty to make Sutter at 4.375 work.
It's just a tough ask, and honestly makes the addition of Colton Sceviour in the Hornqvist trade look even worse.

Hmm, yeah, that is pretty tight...Gaudette isn't gonna be super cheap either...
Yeah, maybe that's not a fit then...that said, this team is constantly injured, so we'll probably pick up some LTIR money before too long...
My only means of kind of weaseling my way out of this is: move ZAR for a late pick, waive Riikola to start the year just for the cap flexibility (he won't be touched with that extra year I don't think), and that gives you $1.9 mil...hmm...yeah, I don't know, I guess we can't do that...I also continue to forget about Kapanen being on the team...I don't think Gaudette would do 1 yr, $2 mil until got some flexibility...perhaps, but probably not...
All right...scrap that I guess...

I'm also not even sure what Jarry gets. I went with 3.75 because I felt it was fair given he'll be the guy going forward, but that remaining space has the possibility to go up or down just due to the fact I have no idea how to value free agent contracts.
I know Tanev played well last year (and he definitely grew on me), but man, when you compare that to what we're getting out of Rust for that same cap hit (though will acknowledge Rust is on a really good contract), it kinda makes you wonder why we paid so much for him. An extra million/million and a half off that deal would go a long way.

Yeah, on a short term deal, you're probably a little high on Jarry. I think Murray got that after winning two Cups...I think we can do something in the twos there...
And yes, shmenguin hated Sutter...

I'm not opposed to moving Simon. Who the hell would be?
mikey's Thread of Penguin Randomness
No-one, I guess. That said, between Simon and, say, Sceviour, I'd rather have Simon.

I don't know every region...but I know the U.S. and Russia really well...with my knowledge, I'm gonna try to take two cracks at it...one blindly (meaning, none of the first 76 picks go) and then one with the pressure on...and we'll all forget about it, unless, I hit on 2 out of 4 of them or better, then I'll bring it up to gloat haha
I really, really believe I can get us an NHLer without even looking at the whole world even with that deck...because I don't draft Casey Pierro-Zabotel or Andy Bathgate's open casket...

You guys aren't gonna believe this, but Rutherford was talking again...
“Dumoulin and Petterson are still young and aren’t going anywhere,” he said. “And obviously we like Matheson a great deal. He’ll play on the left side. So, that’s our left side. Those three. That’s it.”

Talk Big Buff out of retiring, sign him to a 1 year deal to play on the third pair with Pettersson
Start the year with:
Dumo-Letang
Matheson-Marino
Pettersson-Buff
Score the most goals from the back end in the league and let up the 3rd most
Boom

Created a mini-simulation using possible availability of players way, way down the line that I still like...This year we have:
77
108
139
170
77 - Maxim Beryozkin or Dmitry Rashevsky
108 - Brett Berard or Dylan Peterson
139 - Theodor Niederbach or Eamon Powell
170 - Ruslan Novruzov or Kasper Simontaival
I'll trade one of our 7's next year to get back at the end to pick any one of: Parker Ford, Oskar Magnusson, Ivan Kazakov, Roni Hirvonen, Yegor Chizhkov, Nikita Yefremov, Eemil Viro or goaltenders Victor Ostman or Vsevolod Skotnikov
