Actually Jarry's contract status hasn't been talked about enough. He's the marquee of the free agency class. If we don't get an extension done, we could seriously be ****

Is he a lock for a long-term contract? 6 yrs for 6+ million? I don't know.Actually Jarry's contract status hasn't been talked about enough. He's the marquee of the free agency class. If we don't get an extension done, we could seriously be ****

Should be. There aren't a ton of great comparables... Binnington signed 6x6 a year ago. Hellebuyck 6x6.1 about 4 years ago... saros 4x5 a year ago.
Probably 6 years at between 6-7 AAV. He has a ton of leverage... nobody else out there is either A) under 35 or B) any good

Problem is that he has the Matt Murray injury bug. I always wondered how agents defended that, luck, random injuries? It's something he likely has to defend though. Dude can't stay healthy.

Jarry was 6th in games started 2 years ago in 9th last season

Yea, injured at the most critical times.

Top 10 goalie in the league. Easy argument.
mikey's Thread of Penguin Randomness
I do agree he's a top 10, but what's his FA value - I don't know if he's getting higher than $7, and I don't think the Pens would go that high.

We sorta had this convo last week. But he missed one playoff series. What are the other critical times?Yea, injured at the most critical times.

Right now, so that's two in two years. We sorta had this convo last week. But he missed one playoff series. What are the other critical times?Yea, injured at the most critical times.
Then the breakdown of his first full playoff series. He's a top 10 goalie who's shown basically zero in the playoffs. I think that's a risk, and if they miss this year, that's not really a great look either.
BUT Pens are in a tough spot, because what do you do if you don't sign him, Jarry has them in a tight spot, I think.

All Star Break...I mean, how's he gonna break if he's all dinged up...
I think the Pens are gonna wait this out and see if he makes a doo doo in the playoffs again...I think if we get a good, not great performance, they'll set a fairly low ceiling on his cap hit and if he doesn't like it, they'll try to add an older veteran or two as a stopgap for cheaper than $6 or $7 mil...

Stopgap to what?
mikey's Thread of Penguin Randomness
So when he's negotiating next year, they're gonna bring up being hurt in January before the all star break as a critical time? Not really buying that
mikey's Thread of Penguin Randomness
Nope, not just this time - the entirety of the year coupled with a potential first round exit IF they make the playoffs. So when he's negotiating next year, they're gonna bring up being hurt in January before the all star break as a critical time? Not really buying that
It's all what-ifs, and that's what's leading to me wondering what he's worth if he hits the market. Just shooting the breeze.

Stopgap because we're keeping the core together and continuing to try to make the playoffs. So, we'll need someone that can plug and play reliably and fairly cheaply.Stopgap to what?
Whether it's one or two years will depend on the player...but it's not hard to see that going that way.
Or...you look ahead to the next summer's UFA goalie class (potentially): Hellebuyck, Sorokin...lesser extent Spencer Martin and Sam Montembault...or reclamation projects that used to have upside like Kahkonen, Mrazek, Comrie, or Sandstrom...
You also have 2020 pick Joel Blomqvist...he's been a 1B at the top level in Finland again this year with another NHL pick...
Plus, you never know what kind of guys you can find in Europe or in college...
It's a long way of saying, "if Jarry isn't your guy...he doesn't have to be..."

I have similar questions "what happens if he hits the market?"
I think he gets a bag if he's out there...but I think there's a chance he could possibly "Klingberg" himself...

He's terrible, but at least he belonged in the NHL at some point...I wonder if there'd be any interest in this...
Pens get: Cam Talbot (50%, ~$1.8 mil, UFA) and Tyler Motte ($1.3 mil)
Sens get: Casey DeSmith and a 3rd
We swap goalies at even cap basically. They take the extra year of DeSmith. We pick up a really good bottom six player for a 3rd, the Sens don't have a 3rd.
I get the sense that Talbot has negative value, that negative value is probably roughly similar to that of DeSmith. Motte is probably worth a 4th, so getting a 3rd accounts for the extra year of DeSmith. We could probably back that pick off to a 4th if we only ask Ottawa to take 25-33%, but then we're really getting up against our deadline banked cap I think...

The long and short of it is that we ask our goalies to make too many saves. Both are in the top 10 in saves per game. And guess what. Pens and Oilers are the only playoff teams with a goalie in the top 10 of that category. You really want to be associated with Edmonton?
