Petterson really bugs me and I hope Seattle takes him. I don’t have a lot of solid rationale behind this. But I don’t like that he’s an unusually ugly Swedish person, that he can’t control his behavior in intense games, and he’s the exact type of player that keeps teams in the middle class instead of contenting for either titles or draft picks.

He doesn’t suck, but he sucks.
He lead the league in checks taken last season. I honestly think that’s the underlying issue you may have with him.
Nah, that’s in the pro column. He takes the hit to make a play. Braver and tougher man than I.

He eats top 4 minutes and gets a top 4 pay check. But he’s a #4/5 tweener with zero upside on any given shift who should be bottom pair on any team above the median line.

Beyond that...maybe it’s his face. I told you there wasn’t much reasoning here. But he ain’t a guy you go to war with in April.

I'm with you shmenguin. At first he was a nice surprise, a good, smart, reliable guy. Then last year, he was just kinda there.. I'm hoping maybe with the emergence of Marino/POJ and Matheson/Ceci hopefully being better than JJ he can be a solid third pairing guy and not be relied on quite as much

"Control his behavior"...? Where's that one going...? Has Pettersson taken a single compete foul since he's been here...? He's just Maatta, but with a little less puck skill...

Honest question. Is Maatta even in the league anymore?

I figured it out.

Its about debt accumulation vs debt payoff. When he messes up, what levers does he have to pull, within that same game, to make it right? He’s like Maatta, in that he has virtually none. So he ends the game in debt on most nights.

Prime Letang: high debt, high ability to pay off
Prime Dumo: low debt, high ability to make a profit
Marino: enough said
POJ: lots of debt, doesn’t quite pay it back, but does some stuff that puts some hot sauce up your butt.
Riikola: moderate debt but has a sneaky toolkit to raise your eyebrows
Ruh: he’s like hainsey. Not much debt. Mercifully, because he can’t pay it back.

I think upside matters. And I think when a guy like Petterson screws up, it’s particularly deflating since you know he’s not gonna make up for it. I think there’s something to be said for the ability to fight through your struggles and do something good on the other end. He’s a complete stiff and it’s uninspiring. And I don’t want to pay 4 mill and 20 minutes or whatever a night for that.

I think we are closing the Crosby window by trading away Letang (depending on the return of course). Then we barely have a #2D as our best defenseman?

I agree with mikey (and has written it repeatedly) that I really want to sell a player one year too early instead of too late. Exploring the market for Rust seems like a great idea.

Re: expansion draft. Zucker @$5.5M might not be interesting to Seattle so why not expose him. I like the idea of having one "free" defenseman slot availabe for trades and we can always just choose to protect one of our current defensemen...

I think if you're willing to deal Rust you might as well admit that the window is closed and explore the market for anyone but Crosby.

I think it's time to realize and come to grips that the window is closed.

I'm kind of in line with what mikey said, the window may be closed on this particular team but Sid's probably got 5 good years left or so.. let's re-tool and give it a run for those last 3 years...

I can agree with that, but I still think we need a #1D for that. If we trade Letang, we would need to acquire a new one...

This is really well put. My only issue is, wouldn’t like 90% of the league be in this category?

There are some quite good defensemen in this list... Everyone except Carlson and Pietrangelo headed for the Hall? At least until I reach 2006 or earlier champions
2020 - Hedman
2019 - Pietrangelo
2018 - Carlson
2017 - Letang
2016 - Letang
2015 - Keith
2014 - Doughty
2013 - Keith
2012 - Doughty
2011 - Chara
2010 - Keith
2009 - Gonchar
2008 - Lidström
2007 - Pronger/Niedermayer
2006 - Kaberle?
2004 - Boyle

Letang and Gonchar aren't...neither is Petro...

Your point still stands, you need to have a #1 d-man to win consistently in the league...the only exception is the mid-70's Flyers...

Should probably put an asterisk next to Letang in 2017. I know what dodint is thinking, but the fact is that while the 2016 team was far and away the best in the league, the 2017 team needed a ton of luck to pull it off.
