This is Sully's year. Kessel - scoring and inconsistent - out; Tanev - huge motor - in. Maatta - great IQ, slower than 'lasses in wintertime - out; Kahun - solid and fast - in. Sully loves McCann and Rust. Honestly I didn't know this, but Murray/DeSmith had the 5th best save percentage last year, and there's no indication they will be any worse.
Overall, the team is younger, faster, and works harder. Gudbranson and JJ will absolutely benefit from that - these forwards WILL come back and help. Even Malkin sometimes. If they play more team hockey and bring the GA down more than the GF drops, it will be a fun-to-watch, middle-of-the-pack playoff team. If not, Sully's probably not the right guy.

Are we really writing them off... in July?
You should see it over at lgp. Every time I go in there I want to grab some cheese to go with all of the whine.

damn...I had no idea we traded himMaatta - great IQ, slower than 'lasses in wintertime - out; Kahun - solid and fast - in.
I'm a fan of the randomness megathread but i know a while ago the mods were concerned about news getting lost in here. A Maatta trade definitely deserved its own thread

I may have said this before, but looking at a few things during lunch today I was reminded that Rutherford had done a lot of trades with Arizona. A lot of relatively garbage trades, up until Kessel.
12/5/14 Samuelsson for Klinkhammer
2/29/16 Marcantuoni for Jeffrey, Melindy, O'Donoghue
2/29/16 Plotnikov for Plachta
12/19/17 Archibald, Maguire, 7th for Leighton, 4th
6/22/19 4th, 5th, 7th for 3rd
6/29/19 Kessel, Birks, 4th for Galchenyuk, Joseph
Not including the Kessel deal:
Archibald, Samuelsson, Plotnikov, Maguire, Marcantuoni, 4th, 5th, 7th, 7th
- for -
Klinkhammer, Jeffrey, Plachta, Melindy, O'Donoghue, Leighton, 3rd, 4th
Of those 17 "assets", the best overall player there is Archibald that Arizona got, and the best pick is the 3rd (#74 oa) that Pittsburgh got. That is a whole lot of noise for a whole lot of nothing.

I don't mind depth moves, but those are some deep dives. More ECHL games than NHL games played by that entire group after these trades. I just thought that it was interesting.

That doesn't sound right. Everyone in the front office is a product of Botterill. You would think Minnesota would realize that.

[Ryan] Whitney bet Max Talbot that Crosby would never score 50 goals. That bet got back to Crosby (through either Ryan Getzlaf or Corey Perry) and Sid told Whitney at the 2010 Olympics “nice bet”. Scored 50 goals that season.

Crosby was on the Spittin' Chicklets podcast today. It was pretty good, and he opened up more than you normally hear.
He comes on around 49:00 - https://landmark.barstoolsports.net/spi ... a51b98.mp3

I always wondered what Crosby thought about former Bruins players and prospects.

I can't wait to listen tomorrow. Talbot was on recently and I'm assuming he was great. Haven't had a chance to listen to that yet either
