I’d make that deal

Carolina might not if they maintain their hot start/don't crash and burn

The Pittsburgh #Penguins have recalled D Jeff Taylor.
This is likely a paper move in order to maximize LTIR relief for Justin Schultz by getting their projected cap hit as close to the upper limit as possible. With the move they are $43k from the ceiling

It was indeed just a paper transaction. CapFriendly has him already being sent back down. What a happy day for Taylor though. $70,000 salary in the minors but his one day on the NHL roster just netted him $3,992.

So, how do the Pens keep the Leafs from scoring 12 goals tonight?

would anyone be willing to part with a calendar if they went to the Canucks game? I can paypal/venmo some cash. Always have one in my office but they waited for game 3 to give it out this year, and my plan did not have that game.

Five day break to go from Toronto to Edmonton, three day break to go from Vancouver to Pittsburgh. Makes perfect sense.

I haven't had much chance to weigh in on the Pens, and their start to the season - but they're off for a few days and I'm bored with so little hockey to watch, so here goes:
1. Letang is playing some of his best hockey right now, similar to an incredible stretch he had in 2016. I posted last season about him, and the fact that if he wanted to remain an elite defenseman into his 30's, he'd have to chase the play less, rely less on his speed, and use his experience to anticipate plays and improve his situational awareness. He has shown that he's at least capable of doing these things now. This is very encouraging. He's removed most of the "stupid" from his game. Right now, he looks like peak Zubov (with more physicality). Zubov was a cerebral player who could play 25 minutes a night and look like he wasn't ever breaking a sweat, because he utilized his speed and skill in a way that completely masked his shortcomings. If Letang plays this way all season, a Norris and a 4th Cup are possibilities.
2. Murray was phenomenal against the Leafs, which was a confidence boost to him I'm sure, but a sigh of relief for me personally. He has flaws, but his rebound control is otherworldly when he's on his game. Like a groundball pitcher, all he needs is a solid defensive effort, and he can pitch a shutout on any given night. Shoddy defensive play will expose him more than it will other goaltenders, because Murray is not one to make the ridiculous, sprawling saves like some goalies can do. But he played big against the Leafs, using his size and positioning, and gave them nothing to shoot at. They were one-and-done most of the night.
3. Jack Johnson hasn't been good, but he was better against the Leafs, which typically means his name isn't being called as much. He made a crushing hit behind the net and another one along the boards that completely separated the player from the puck. He also made a nice play to hold the zone and another good play to force the Leafs offside on what could have become an odd man situation.
4. Geno looks rested, and hungry. Much like Letang, he is not doing dumb things.. which was a big factor in his turnaround last season. Malkin appears, even at age 32, like he's a top 5 player again.
5. Many of the forwards are struggling, or sluggish, or whatever term you want to use. Not enough puck battles are being won. Not enough offensive zone time. Rust, in particular, hasn't been effective. I'm not sure Matt Cullen should be getting a jersey every night at this point. It's early, but he looks like burnt toast. I'm not sure Grant or Hayes fit the Pens from a skating standpoint, but adding some size and some sandpaper around the opposing net wouldn't be a bad idea every now and then. Aside from the Malkin, Kessel and Guentzel show, not a lot is happening with the forwards. That needs to change, because this team isn't reaching the promised land by winning games 2-1.

I would think the Pens, much like most of their fan base, can’t get excited about October hockey against non-rivals. I wouldn’t expend much energy against the likes of Vancouver either.

Zubov for Kevin Hatcher, worst trade ever.
