Reading too deep, but the gist of that Riikola quote is "See you next year."
He made the team though...
He's in for Dumo, right?

I like the guy and hope he sticks.

Nevermind, I found a quote backing up LBL:
Sullivan confirms Juuso Riikola has made the roster. ‘I think he’s a guy who has earned his way.’ #DKPS #Penguins

And quite honestly, I would still put him in the roster above Ruhwedel when Dumoulin returns. He just looks better in virtually every aspect of his game.

It has to be down to him and Ruhwedel. They're one over the active roster limit.
Three goalies are still here.

Jarry will go to WBS as soon as he is healthy. If it is past Thursday, then Jarry will start on SOIR (Season Opening IR) because he can't be sent to the AHL while injured.

Nice to see Riikola make the team, but Sullivan is going to have his hands full trying to get him into some games. Sully is going to have to rotate some guys out on defense after a bad game, unless there is another early injury. Not good to have two guys sitting for weeks at a time not playing.

Might be unpopular but I think once Dumo is healthy Riikola should be sent down to WBS. Doesn't require waivers and I can't see them sitting Oleksiak or Maatta.

I think you get him in games earlier rather than later, personally.

Dumo doesn't appear he'll be ready for the start of the season. Play Riikola until he is, then see where everyone is at. Big minutes in WBS getting used to the NA ice size is better than nachos.

I could see them sitting Oleksiak, but certainly not Maatta,

I wish Oleksiak or JMFJ would get moved to LW...where's FHCMT when you need him...

Depending on how the season goes for him, and what his contract demands would be, I'd be open to it.

Trading Maatta is nonsense. Please refrain from nonsense.

Right, it's a big IF right now. If you recall, early in camp, I floated the idea of Riikola allowing the Penguins to move Schultz, which was more based on Schultz cap hit and current term. But, for as well as Maatta played last year, his foot speed is always going to be an issue in this Penguins system.

IF Riikola can get a solid 20-40 games under his belt at this level and continue to show the same level of play against the Capitals, the Bolts, the Jets, the Predator type teams, I would be very open to consider moving Maatta for an upgrade at LW. Riikola is only 9 months older than Maatta, so it isn't like you are getting much older. Go and get someone like Erik Haula from Vegas. Haula has speed, and Vegas could use some improved defense after Schmidt, Theodore, and Miller.

But, that type of talk is a bit down the road and requires continued steady play from Riikola to even consider.

I'd prefer we keep Maatta, slow foot speed and all.

Maatta would bring back a pretty solid young player. He's still young, and signed long term. I don't think it would ever happen but, as you pointed out, his foot speed is a poor fit. The problem with getting rid of Justin is you only have one RHS left on the team.
