I still don't think Simon Despres was anything special, but for some reason people were treating him like he was the next Paul Coffey.

I don't recall any of that. But he was a fairly highly regarded prospect, so there were some expectations that he'd at least stick in the NHL...

I thought he'd be a real good 4th, or possibly a solid 3rd in the depth chart. Wasn't going to be going to the All-star game ever but a solid defenseman that could skate well and chip in offensively.

Yeah, that was about all I recall about the "hype" too...I didn't think he was thought of as special, at least not by anyone remotely normal or coherent...but remembering prospect hype is like remembering what I did on Saturday night...impossible.

Good thing you were able to block that out. That he kept getting sent back down to improve his game seemed like it reached personal insult levels to quite a few people both on the old board and outside the board.

I liked Despres. Gave him a lot of credit for adding a physical element to his game when it became obvious he needed to add to his skillset to stick in the NHL.

Despres was basically just a bad penalty machine. I'm not convinced that he ever played a game without taking one.

Though I do have fond memories of the old LGP game chat where we proved that it was plausible that Paul Stanley was his father.

I'm looking at out 2013-14 roster, the season right before Rutherford was hired

man, what a sad state of affairs we were in back then. Rutherford did some miracles

So Sid and Jake are still leading the playoffs in points.

Absolutely zero scoring depth will do that.

we have some goooood infrastructure on this team. I like how he’s challenging the young guys to take leadership roles. That’s how you avoid rebuilds.

I love this man. I hope he is a longer-term solution (i.e., 7+ years)

I know. It's very rare to have a guy in place for longer than 3-4 years in the hockey world really, but I think we have a good shot. I think in the past decade or so you have Babcock, Ruff, Hitchcock? that lasted 5+ with one team
