I just watched the last 10 minutes of G6:
1. How the hell did they win with Hainsey in there?
2. In a vacuum, I will really miss Kunitz
3. The stunned NSH fans suffering was awesome
4. No mercy: three peat

I really wished either Cullen or Kunitz were still with the Pens. I feel they could really use that veteran presence.

does ZAR have a chance to win the 3C job?
mikey's Thread of Penguin Randomness
My guess is that - more likely - one of the kids will pass Rowney on the depth chart and he'll switch to a plugin (as needed) at wing.

It looks like the candidates for 3C are McKegg, Johnson, Blueger, Mystery Man. I think they view Rowney (and McClement) as a 4C at best, ZAR has been used strictly as a winger.

Gotcha. I just looked at yesterday's box score and ZAR was listed as a center
mikey's Thread of Penguin Randomness
Pretty sure he played on the wing last night, which now begs the question why NHL.com/the box score listed him as a C.

Because the NHL website is downright horrible. I try to avoid it at all costs.Pretty sure he played on the wing last night, which now begs the question why NHL.com/the box score listed him as a C.

For what it's worth, Bombulie on Madden last week said if he had to bet on 3C and 4C for opening night, Rowney would be 3C and McClement would be 4C. That seems odd to me, but, of course, I haven't been at the practices or watching the games.

Glass half full: bonino was a 6th round pick with no pedigree. Eventually, someone had to say, "wow, he's gonna be a 3rd liner in this league. Who woulda thunk it".
It's not the craziest thing in the world to think one of our guys could take that leap. I'm guessing binino had some extra time to marinate on the 4th line, but shoot...guentzel went from zero to setting rookie scoring records in one season. So there's more than a glimmer of hope.

Honestly, and you of all people will appreciate this shmenguin, the biggest difference between a 3rd amd 4th line defensive center is usually offensive skill and maybe skating...Rowney can D up like a 3rd line center, he gets the game, he anticipates movement of very strong offensive players...I don't think I see the skills to craft a 3rd line player...that is my concern.
Semi-related, I still like Adam Johnson or whatever the UMD Bulldog speedster we got is named...

I guess what I'm saying is (and you aren't necessarily disagreeing) is that some time ago, 30 GMs felt that bonino wasn't likely to be a well rounded 3C either.Honestly, and you of all people will appreciate this shmenguin, the biggest difference between a 3rd amd 4th line defensive center is usually offensive skill and maybe skating...Rowney can D up like a 3rd line center, he gets the game, he anticipates movement of very strong offensive players...I don't think I see the skills to craft a 3rd line player...that is my concern.

But this isn't Rowney-specific. I'm more hoping we might see something unexpected from the unknown guys. But on the other hand, it probably takes a few years to develop the IQ needed for that spot.
