Testing the market implies they don't know what other teams are willing to pay. I have a hard time believing that.
When you're a big free agent, teams really try to woo you, they wine and dine you...they really sell you on the perks of playing in that city, with that organization...

It's not like a video game where teams bid on players like an auction, ya know? There's more to it than that. Maybe Letang has some stuff he wants to do post-career, or whatever...

There's just a little bit more to it than getting a contract offer faxed over to you...

And, really, you don't know exactly what you can get in a pressure situation. On noon on July 1st or 13th or whatever it is, you don't know what happens...Drew Doughty suddenly retires or demands a trade out of the blue, well, ok, we can do 4 yrs, $10.5 mil per for Letang now. It's not always so obvious...it definitely can be, but not looking around can cost you some money (similarly, looking around can cost you too...like it did for Anthony Duclair, for instance - but that wouldn't happen to a player of Letang's caliber. There's only like three people on the planet that don't realize what an incredible player this is haha)

Bjorkqvist, 24, was a restricted free agent with the Penguins this offseason. The Penguins still have the option to extend Bjorkqvist a qualifying offer, which would allow them to retain Bjorkqvist's North American rights until he reaches age 27, in the event that he does elect to come back to North America before then.

They should definitely qualify him.

Kind of a bummer based on current cabinet of younger players. I thought this kid was going to get a shot next year.

I think he's not interested in going back to the AHL and I get that.

So I see press releases about the Goat League at upmc Lemieux on Wednesdays, but nothing else. Anybody have any idea what the deal is in terms of game schedules, etc.

They left pretty much all detail out of it. I wanted to see who was on the teams

Bjorkqvist had zero finish. Dude was incredibly underwhelming.

Here's the thing: if Letang and Geno want maximum $$$, they're better off elsewhere. If they want to win another Cup ... they're probably better off elsewhere, too.
The Penguins were good enough to win the cup this year

Maybe, but there are certainly some teams that will presumably have a better shot. COL needs a new 2nd line center.

No big loss, as he probably wasn't going to be an NHL player...but my man played 65 AHL games (14 points), maybe you wanna give it another shot...?

That said, it's probably way easier for him to play and make money in his home country...it's not like he was even getting ice time over those other luminaries down there, so he's probably better off...

same here. I checked the Lemieux Complex site and there's nothing. They said they had a social media guy who was pushing the league and there wasn't much on there either.

"I am not happy with my time in the AHL," Bjorkqvist said in the Karpat team release. "Even though I was able to do things that made me promoted to the NHL, my game was still not as good there as I would have liked. I feel like I’m a more versatile player than I was there."

Me thinks he didn’t adjust well to the physicality of NA hockey

His call up in general surprised me a little actually...getting a six-game check probably ought to have been enough to keep him on the hook for another year, if we were going to qualify him at all...which I have my doubts on.

What would be reasonable offers for Letang and Malkin, from a neutral point of view?
