All this plus Pens were down 0-2 to Detroit. 09 also had a more likeable group of guys. Not to say I dislike '16 but c'mon- Billy Guerin, Sergei Gonchar, Hal Gill, Max Talbot... That squad just felt more "special".Oh and lets get serious

I'll give you that one. It was a long time (well, not as long as some teams... Cap, Flyers, Leafs, lulz) since their last one, but 7 year SCF drought with two of the best of the generation is a long time too.Oh and lets get serious

2016 was redemtion for all the piss poor playoff performances since 2009 in my mind2008 redemption
This one does nothing for me. They beat the caps (ZOMG THEY'RE UNSTOPPABLE caps) along the way, which is good enough for me.Defeat the most successful franchise of the decade
I think the joy on Kessel's face felt better than disappointment on Hossa's faceHossa
Can't deny that. If instead of the Lightning it was the flyers, the cup run this year would have been perfect.Epic washington series

I think one thing that puts 2016 ahead of 2009 for me is just the season as a whole. This team doesn't have a defense good enough to win a cup, Crosby and Malkin are past their prime, hell, there were many that were convinced the Pens weren't even going to make it in the playoffs (I'll admit, when Malkin went down, I was worried about it).
Like slappy said, I love them all the same, but I like 2016 more.

I felt like i watched the 09 team grow...because i did. I cared about every guy on that team. The story of a team that has been flaming out and underachieving for near a decade finally playing with some brains and heart isnt a great one. This one doesnt feel that special to me, part of this may also be that im not going to games anymore and just dont feel as invested though.
Which Cup felt better?
It has to be '09, because the Sharks are weaksauce and that stigma will always be there.

If you offered me a coffee stained $100 bill, Id take it and it would spend just like all of the others.

2016 for me.

Also the 2016 cup has Duper and Daley's mom story lines. The "win it for them" storylines are fun.

I think considering the turmoil, it's 2016. For me at least. In 2009 it was a young team on the rise, with several years of Crosby and Malkin in their primes ahead of it. This one? Hm, let's see what happened since: Crosby's concussion saga, where some idiots thought he had a tumor and was going to retire, and everything that entailed. "This team has no leadership." "Crosby and Mario don't like each other anymore." "Mario is going to sell the team to a Bob Nutting-esque figure that will be in it purely for profit and never spend to the cap." "Kessel is a complete bust, and now we're stuck with him for eight years." "Rutherford is a doddering old fool." "Mike Johnston can't coach, and it doesn't even matter, because this team is completely uncoachable." And this isn't even something that was building up and simmering: these were all popular opinions IN JANUARY OF THIS YEAR.

For me it's 2016, and it's not even close.
The 2009 team, although they had to overcome Therrien, it was a team that had been in the finals the year before. Knocking off the Red Wings/Hossa was great of course.
In December of 2015, I was at the lowest I had been hockey wise since the Generation X days. One playoff disappointment after another, Coach Coma stealing all life out of the game with his system, Crosby looking washed up, Letang was a mess... Rutherford was a bumbling old fool that took over Shero's dumpster fire and poured the gasoline... If they gave up more than one goal, they were probably going to lose. If they were trailing in the third, you could turn the game off because there was no chance of them coming back. If they fell behind by 2... same thing.
And then with a coaching change and a few moves, they brought the excitement back. I certainly wasn't expecting a Cup run, at that point, but hockey was fun to watch again. Then everything started to come together in that ridiculous March and there was reason to believe this year could be different.
Still, the road was going to be tough... the Rangers had eliminated them 2 years in a row and Lundqvist had dominated them... the President trophy winning caps would be waiting... and Tampa was a better team than their points indicated due to all of the injuries, not to mention that they had been to the final last year.
The Sharks obviously were significantly worse than the '09 Wings, but the Capitals and Lightning teams they knocked off were really damn good teams, and both of those series easily could have gone the other way with a few bounces. The best team you play isn't always in the finals, and that isn't going to affect my enjoyment of what this team was able to accomplish in any manner.

It was in 2015 for the Lightning. He was horrid for much of the '15 playoffs. That's why they didn't fall all over themselves to keep him...
"We'll give you $8.5 million per..."
- "Ok, well then I'll just walk because freakin' Jonathan Toews makes like $10+..."
"k bye."
- "So that's it, after all the success I've had here, just like that: so long, good luck?"
"I don't recall saying 'good luck'..."

I would have to go with the 2016 version because of where this team was in mid-December and then where they were when Malkin got hurt at the end of the season. At the time Geno got hurt, I believe they were 1 or 2 points up in the 2nd WC position and every game felt like a high-wire act. Then the HBK line is born and they reel off that 14 out of 16 stretch and you could feel a wave building that MAYBE they could get to the conference finals. I'd say because of the unexpectedness of this year's run, I'd go 2016. I remember having a conversation with Mark Recchi (yes, I name-dropped) in Primanti's a couple of weeks after they got eliminated in 2007 and he said that this team was going places so with the playoff run in 2008, you kinda had the expectation in 09 that they'd be right there again. The way the series played out vs the Wings may make that year's more satisfying but to me, 09 was a culmination of that building process. This year kinda came from way back in the pack.

I'm really surprised at how many people are picking 2016. In 2009 3 out of the 4 series couldn't have been better if they were scripted. This year it was satisfying to beat the Rangers, but the outcome never felt like it was in doubt. The Caps series was tight and felt good to win, but that 09 Caps series had so many shifts in momentum and the Crosby/Ovechkin scoring duel. Now that we're out of the heat of the moment, I don't really have anything against Tampa or San Jose to make those wins extra special.

I'm discounting it as recency bias or folks that never actually saw 2009 because they hopped the bandwagon late.Source of the post I'm really surprised at how many people are picking 2016
