Penguins 2016 Draft Recap

Postby Dickie Dunn » Mon Jun 27, 2016 12:26 pm

Penguins have made 48 second round picks in their history:

Top Five By Games Played:
1994 - Richard Park - 738 Games
1976 - Greg Malone - 704 Games
1973 - Colin Campbell - 636 Games
2004 - Alex Goligoski - 562 Games
1989 - Paul Laus - 530 Ganes

Top Five By Points:
1976 - Greg Malone - 501 Points
2004 - Alex Goligoski - 277 Points
1994 - Richard Park - 241 Points
1972 - Jack Lynch - 130 Points
1973 - Colin Campbell - 128 Points

Congrats to Greg Malone, the best second round pick in the history of the franchise.

Overall, 12 of the 48 picks never played a game in the NHL, though it's too early to rule out Jarry, Gustavsson, Bjorkqvist, and Blueger. Goligoski is far and away the only successful second round pick since Richard Park in 1994. Some really sad names from the dark ages pop up when you look at the list. Stone. Endicott. Murley. Welch. Salmonsson. Sneep. Veilleux. Just terrible.

If I turn out to be wrong, I'll have @mikey eat another coat hanger.

I'm willing to have the mods erase the hanger bet, if - in turn - I don't have watch Avatar. :pop:

Ooh, ya know what card I never played...he didn't score any goals this season, only two in 103 games all year...how can he be good if he doesn't score goals...the Sutter offensive ftw...

So basically, we ended up trading Schultz for Bennett at the deadline (and moving UP in the 3rd rd), right?

That's tremendous.

And there remains a distinct possibility that we keep Schultz too...

I actually think we end up signing him for a multi-year deal in the 2's. I said as much on Reddit, and got downvoted like crazy, which means I'm probably right.

They didn't qualify schultz so he is a free agent on July 1st...not that it matters much i guess.

Yeah, that was pretty much expected. His QO is just way too high.

I don't know a thing about any of the draft picks, but Bjorkvist is the greatest Nordic name in history

I really hope he plays in the NHL some day

I bet there are teams with cap space that would like to pay Schultz $4M per over multiple years.

I'm sure there are. The question is, is Schultz willing to make a few less bucks for another good shot at winning a Cup, while playing a full-time role? That is assuming that another top team doesn't offer him crazy money.

I'm guessing he'll take the money and a top 4 role on another team.

Yeah I would assume since he has his cup he would take the money and a top 4 role somewhere else if given the chance. We shall see.

He played well for us, but top-4 well? It'd have to be on a very weak (defensively) team, IMO. I still maintain that we'll wind up keeping one of Schultz or Lovejoy.

Justin Schultz in a Top 4 role is a terrifying thought.

No, just trying to use my mystical powers to get Schultz to re-sign here for a bargain.

He's making $3m - in Calgary. We basically rescued Schultz and resuscitated his career.
