What are your thoughts on how our divisional rivals have drafted thus far?
Nothing surprising really...CBJ takes Dubois over Puljujarvi, that's fine and all...I think he's ultimately a winger down the line, but they want him as a center...not sure they got that...NJ with McLeod takes a "head down" center, big hard worker, but not a lot of smarts in my opinion...faster Gratton? The Isles with Kieffer Bellows, that's not a pretty good pick. He can really shoot. They draft shooters a lot. They have Michael Dal Colle and some others that love to shoot. Bellows can really fire. Flyers took Rubtsov...good two-way Russian, hard worker, but not a ton of finish really. Bigger/tougher Alex Burmistrov maybe? Lucas Johansen in Wsh isn't a really "impact" player maybe...he's a smart, but composed player. Not a lot of huge strengths, but I have seen him a lot less than others...

I love Debrincat. He really took his game to a new level when he was traded to Erie.

The timbits are: I'm very pro shooters. What else happens in a game less than six times but is a positive for your team? Nothin'. I like guys that can shoot. I value "mid-range" scoring more than most. That said, DeBrincat is not big, he's not that strong and he's not that fast. I don't love combo. If he was slippery as an eel, ok, I'll give it a look. But he's not a very good skater. So I really am not wild about him. But let's see, in two years, maybe his edge work and first step improve, and then you have a player...

First goalie goes at 48 to Philadelphia - Carter Hart.

I thought they already had a goalie in their system? Seems high to grab another.

I honestly don't know much about him...he only played a few games in the SHL, I don't really see a lot of Swedish Jrs....I can make some stuff if you'd like?

Seems like a Matt Murray clone, but I guess this is looking past Jarry assuming Murray is your guy, Jarry is either a backup or a piece to move if he's good enough.

Okay, now even I'm surprised that we took a goalie in the 2nd.

2. Filip Gustavsson – G – Catches: L – 6’2”, 184 lbs. – Lulea (U20)
CSS European Goalie Rank: #1
Jun. 7, 1998

Although this draft is not being ballyhooed as a strong one for goaltenders, Filip Gustavsson may just be the best of the bunch and shows a lot of the same skills, schooling, discipline and athleticism that the scouting community has seen coming form the top netminders out of Sweden in recent years.

Posing great size for a goalie, Gustavsson shows great anticipation and knows how to cover the posts better than most. His reflexes are above-average, and he can simply shutdown opponents when he gets in a groove. Ironically, it has been his play when in the spotlight that has really stood out most. That is when he is at his best, as was seen once again at the U18 when his mid-tournament arrival was all the team needed to garner silver. Able to track the puck and keep with shooters well, he has a big look to him and exudes confidence.

On Kasper Bjorkqvist - not a high upside player. Smart, has a skating base that he can grow off of...looks like he needs to get the motor skills working with his size. Defensive. PKer. Willing shot blocker. Willing to be physical. College is a good route for him. We'll see if he develops an offensive upside. From what I know about him from the U20 WJCs, probably only has third line upside...but that's a small look. He was a bottom six forward on that team as well...

I don't know anything about him, but I'd rather see a solid/smart worker picked over someone with little chance of their "skill game" translating into the NHL.

But you can't guarantee that the "solid worker" makes it. No one is a guarantee really, so I lean towards betting on skill. But you need a mix. I have no problem with the pick itself at the moment. Often "safe" picks don't make it either...which doesn't contradict your statement either...

Speaking of...Connor Hall picked at 77. 6-foot-2 d-man, plays bigger than that. Good on the boards. Still working through some skating mechanics, but I think he'll be able to smooth it out. Looks like a kid that grew a couple inches in the last 18 months or so maybe (I don't know that, just from looking at how he moves). Not big on skills. Above average shot. Not much else. There was some talk about him being a late riser. I haven't seen him more than once I don't think, and he wasn't very noteworthy...
