Salary Cap up/down

Postby FistOfCaufield » Thu Jun 16, 2016 12:40 pm

Just was watching 5 minutes on NHL network TV, the 3 hosts were discussing salary cap, said something about the players getting sick of the escrow (roughly 15% of their contract salary is held in escrow until the end of the year figures are released or something ike that) and using their escalator clause which would limit the salary cap to 69 million (but I think would remove the escrow deal), which is not the 73 million discussed by Bettman earlier this year.

Escrow is paid into regardless.

Cap will probably sit at around $69 or $70 million if no 5% escalator is used. No escalator, less lost to escrow, more money per paycheck. Potentially unhappy camper: Steven Stamkos.

Here's a link to one of the articles I read last week about the situation: http://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-salary-cap-fall/

It seems very odd that the union would push for a scenario, which results in a lower cap.

Yeah, I don't see them allowing that to happen.

Sounds like the NHL will release the 2016-17 salary cap figure by middle of next week. Talk is around ~$73-million. Inflator not final yet.

Yeah but from the players perspective - if the cap goes up more of their paycheck goes into the escrow. More money in their pocket at cap of 69 mil versus 73 mil with escrow. Not sure if that's right, but that's what I gather is the thinking behind that. In that scenario Stamkos is getting screwed because this is the year he's got UFA status, and if the cap stays at 69, well yeah.. .that sucks for him.

NHLPA will agree to exercise the escalator clause (5%) but wants to make sure everybody's on board before making it official.
