Defense wins championships...and not playing defense denies mvp awards.

I really kind of wish Phil would have won it, but this was the final feather in Sid's cap in terms of being an all-time great.

If they win another one it will probably go to Phil. Crosby earned this.

For what it's worth, my dark horse pick was Bonino. He was arguably the most clutch player on the team.

Wow, I have never seen CS voting in full before...awesome.
Awesome that Letang received as much love as he did too. He was awesome.
Kessel was probably a goal away...

I wanted either Kessel or Sid to win it. I think Phil was in the lead going into the finals, but Sid edged him out with his effort in the finals.
If Kessel buries one or two of those chances in Game 5 and the Pens win, he probably gets it. But he didn't... And Sid setup the cup winner and blocked a shot leading to the ENG... Combined with his set play in OT, general beast play in the finals and 3 gwg in the ECF... Just enough to edge out Kessel's points lead.

I feel the same way. I think it may have been more of a "lifetime achievement" vote for Sid. I'd love to know the breakdown of Canadian vs. American writers who voted, and specifically how many Toronto writers voted. I few hacks in Toronto could have been the difference.I really kind of wish Phil would have won it, but this was the final feather in Sid's cap in terms of being an all-time great.

This is atrocious to me:
I can understand giving Crosby the Conn Smythe, but not even including Kessel in the top 3? That's a world class snow job.Scott Cullen @tsnscottcullen 2h2 hours ago
2 of 18 didn't include Kessel in top three.

Crosby captured his first Conn Smythe with nine first-place votes. Kessel finished just behind Crosby with seven first-place votes. Kris Letang earned the other two first-place votes.
(Full disclosure: I was one of the 18 voters and my ballot was 1. Kessel, 2. Martin Jones, and 3. Crosby.)
Kessel finished with more second-place votes (eight) than Crosby (five). The NHL uses a 5-3-1 format to calculate the votes: five points for first, three points for second, one point for third.
The final point total based on that system and the information obtained by tsn.ca: Crosby 63, Kessel 60.
TSN.ca Conn Smythe Tabulation: Based on 5 (1st) - 3 (2nd) - 1 (3rd) point system
Player Team 1st 2nd 3rd PTS
Sidney Crosby Pittsburgh 9 5 3 63
Phil Kessel Pittsburgh 7 8 1 60
Kris Letang Pittsburgh 2 2 2 18
Martin Jones San Jose 0 2 1 7
Matt Murray Pittsburgh 0 1 4 7
Logan Couture San Jose 0 0 7 7

Surprised Murray tied Jones in votes. If the series went 7 and game 6 was another Jones masterpiece, I think he should've won it.
the series was as close as it was because of Jones.

I thought that if Canada wins the World Cup this summer then Sid would stand alone in terms of international and professional accomplishments in the sport. But apparently stupid Joe Sakic won one of those, too.I really kind of wish Phil would have won it, but this was the final feather in Sid's cap in terms of being an all-time great.

Looking at the numbers, it seems that one voter excluded Crosby from the top three, as well. This is atrocious to me:

Well if the voters had a list of say Crosby-Jones-Bonino, or Kessel-Bonino-Jones, or something similar I can see where people could exclude those two from the list. I don't agree, but I could see the thought process.

I can easily see an argument for 2 of couture jones pavelski being in your 3.

I've never been a fan of awards that are given by a vote of anyone - "experts" or not.
Winning the Conn Smythe is a nice honor and I think for Sid this one may have been a combination of actual performance and "lifetime achievement."
Kessel made his critics look foolish and is now a Pittsburgh folk hero. He'll have to work hard to not be welcome anywhere in Pittsburgh for the rest of his life. Phil winning it wouldn't have done any violence to logic or hockey etiquette but let's not pretend that Sid didn't silence a lot of critics, exhibit great poise and leadership, and play extremely well all over the ice against the best the opposition had to send against us.
