Perhaps Staal's most accurate shot all season.

Bonino certainly is not a 2nd line center, but he did a good job impersonating one tonight

Wave is dumb, but wooing is worse.

Only reason I can think of not to pull the goalie is Bill Peters read up on early Soviet hockey tendencies and philosophy last night. Or...he was so disappointed in his club's effort after letting the game become knotted that he said, "you're gonna have to earn support...we're not gonna just try to bail you out of a situation that you allowed to happen...work for it and we'll pour it all in, but the way yous were playing it was just gonna turn 4-2 game into a 5-2 game after eight ****** seconds..."

Either that or the spirit of Joe Corvo is still alive and kicking in that team all these years later.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda...but it would be interesting to see where this club would be if they started the year with Sullivan.

Actually, it was the ghost of Pierre Creamer.

I'm not sure how Staal didn't get called for that low blow, and I'm also not sure why somebody, anybody didn't tell Steigerwald or Errey that the non delay of game call was because the puck bounced off the top of the damn glass, which was clear as day on live TV.

Staal should get a game for the spear. It was completely unnecessary and a (mild) message needs to be sent that things like that will not be tolerated. Even if it is just a fine... something.

Huh? What was wrong with the officiating? They did a fine job last night...I don't know what people want/are looking at...I'd want the Staal spear back if I had a choice...but other than that, nothing really seemed out of place...at least not enough to whine about...

What about the Pens clearly throwing the puck over the glass and no call? Or Hagelin's dive?

We're just so used to the officiating being horrendous that we're now willing to accept just a few badly missed calls.

The fact that the ref was adamant that it was deflected over the glass when it was clear it wasn't was hilarious.

Yeah, that call could be solved with expanding the coach's challenge. The delay of game call is a no brainer. Let that be challenged. Hooks, dives, trips... that's a little harder.

The puck glanced off the top of the glass.

Didn't that puck "clearly" hit the glass...? Like that's a prime example...just so hellbent on "gotchas!" instead just looking with an open mind...the puck hit the glass, no penalty...

I'd have to see the Hagelin dive again...I saw it once at live speed, I didn't think it was a dive really, but it might have been...the guy with the best look at in the world was the ref in that corner, much better than the TV view...he made the call, he must have saw something...

The puck clearly hit the top of the glass. Not the top portion of the pane. The actual top of the glass. Hagelin flopped so hard, too.

Anyone have a video? I guess I should take a second look but last night it looked pretty cut & dry to me. I looked on the Canes subreddit but they have like 12 subscribers.

I remember Hagelin doing a barrel roll...usually you have to kick both feet up for that...and if he did, that's a dive...but like I said, I saw it out of the corner of my eye once at live speed...I wasn't watching down low like that ref was...I'll give him the benefit of the doubt...

So that's zero penalties that are issues now if the rules are adhered to...and then the Staal spear, which we all agree is something...so, with no ax to grind, the game was officiated well...

The live action camera is actually a decent view of it. The puck comes up and disappears for a second then bounces up again. You sort of see it, lose it, then it skips up again. Live, I was afraid it hit the side penalty box glass, which if I remember correctly is still a penalty.

Yeah, that glass is high glass, so I believe that would be a penalty...though, if you can hit the top of the penalty box glass it should be worth two goals because that's hard as hell to hit...

Okay for the sake of argument, the puck did hit the glass and Hagelin did embellish. Even with those declared good calls, missing such a dangerous play like a spear to the groin still would not constitute a well officiated game. If Rust fell in pain, they probably would have made the call (along with embellishment) but because he didn't, it's no call.

I mean, if one missed call in a scrum makes the game poorly officiated...then every game in professional and amateur sports history has been poorly officiated...which, I suppose is fair, but I'd say that's more of an issue with the eyes of the beholder than with officiating in a particular game...the game, God willing, will never become so sterile that every thing about it will be perfect and calculated and without question...that would be boring...it would make for the worst film of all time, if nothing else...

Here's the video of the puck hitting the glass. Before pressing play, change the video speed to .5 to see it in slow motion.
