The worst part is I bet they trade a forward to get a D and then like 3 forwards get hurt

We shouldn’t be making any damn trades right now given how many injuries we’ve got going on, IMO.

Looking at the cumulative effect now of missing Crosby + Dumo... no two players can replace what they bring. The void will be massive, but there are still a handful of guys who can put the puck in the net, so they will have to play it close to the vest and win 2-1 and 3-2 games for a while.

I do feel, however, that there are a multitude of players available who would be an upgrade over Trotman and Ruhwedel. The team is okay with Letang, Marino, JJ, and Petterson. Rikkola is an acceptable fill in for 2 months. They need a #5 or #6 guy. Those guys are always out there, and anything is better than giving Trotman a jersey every night.

Dumo is LHS/LD. This just puts Riikola in on a nightly basis. If you're going to make a trade, it's gotta be a meaningful upgrade on Riikola. On the right side, it wouldn't be hard to upgrade on Trotman...who the organization inexplicably likes...

I would trade ZAR to Edmonton for Matt Benning without a second thought, for instance...

To end up with Letang/Schultz/Marino/Benning on the right side would be really good...

I also wonder how many times we can pluck a young d-man from the Oilers before they close the window...

I like the Benning idea. I mean, even with the forwards injured, I don't see Blandisi or Johnson being much (if any) downgrade over ZAR.

Benning is a fairly big upgrade over Trotman. So, in a nutshell, this is why it's a very reasonable trade.

You people realize that you are talking about Benning, right? Because it really doesn't seem like you do...

They won’t trade us another defenseman, will they? They won’t.

I mean, I guess not. The organization believes - and they tell anyone who will listen - that they have 10 NHL d-men right now. But Ruhwedel has to pay to play, Riikola has played more at forward this year, and remember that good game Trotman had...? No? You don't watch the minors...? Ok fine. And hell, I didn't even mention JMFJ...

We hit the first significant "ok, where are we at?" checkpoint of the year. So it's conceivable that something easy is out there. I think they'll look around but won't force it...

Considering every other team in the league passed and Honka left this country I don’t think it would take much. Make no mistake the guy is a reclamation project and isn’t even a bandaid in this case.

Or maybe I was just pointing out that the Pens organization has a pretty good track record of picking up defensemen from teams they had fallen out of favor with (Marino, Schultz, Cole, Pettersson, Daley) and have got some great seasons out of them.

Niskanen was the worst player in the league when we got him...Engeland, a career minor leaguer...
