I mean, seems like the Penguins traded away one valuable asset in the first round pick and effectively just swapped cap space to make this deal happen?

None that he was willing to go to with his NTC. Carolina was in on it but signed other guys. Kracken were allegedly interested too.

This is similar to the kinds of trades I used to try to make on NHL 2004 back in the day. See if the AI would give me Lidstrom or Blake for Bogunecki, Melichar and a 3rd.
