Not prorating this season, it saves the Sens about $6 million in real cash over the life of the contracts. And Gaborik's contract is that much more digestible for when they try to pass it along. The Sens aren't going to see any playoff revenues the next three seasons, so a five or six sheet savings is nice and that's even if they have to swallow Gaborik whole...
